Laura can paint 1/x of a certain room in 20 minutes. What fraction of the same room can Joseph paint in 20 minutes if the two of them can paint the room in an hour, working together at their respective rates?

1/3x

3x/(x – 3)

(x – 3)/3x

x/(x – 3)

(x – 3)/x

Laura can paint (3/x) of the room in one hour.
Let J's rate be (y/x) per hour.

Since it says that they can paint the room together in one hour,

=> (3/x) + (y/x) = 1
=> y = (x-3)/x (This is the rate per hour, according to our assumption)

Hence the answer would be (x-3)/(3x)
