I'll try...
1. Public-access cable television was created in the 1970s as a means to derive public benefit from the laying of private television cables on public land. A) from the laying of private television cables on public land B) from laying private television cables on the public land C) by the laying of private television cables on the public's land D) from private television cables being laid on public land E) by laying private television cables on land that was public
The idiom is "derive from"
I narrowed it to A and B.....did not understand what is wrong...and hence picked (B). Can someone explain what is the wrong between A and B
2. The bowerbirds of Australia derive their name from the fact that the males build elaborate bowers of sticks and twigs to attract females, decorating them with flowers and other vegetation in a display of courtship.
A) the fact that the males build elaborate bowers of sticks and twigs to attract females, decorating them with flowers and other vegetation B) the elaborate bowers of sticks and twigs that the males build and decorate with flowers and other vegetation in order to attract females - correct C) the elaborate bowers of sticks and twigs, decorated with flowers and other vegetation that the males use to attract females - changes meaning D) the fact that the males build elaborate bowers of sticks and twigs, having decorated them with flowers and other vegetation, to attract females E) the elaborate bowers of sticks and twigs that are built by the males and decorated with flowers and other vegetation to attract females - awkward
3. Due to the highly sensitive nature of the court proceedings, the jury has been sequestered to prevent the leaking of information to the press. A) has been sequestered to prevent the leaking of information - correct B) have been sequestered to prevent the leaking of information C) has been sequestered to prevent them from leaking information D) have been sequestered in an attempt to prevent them from leaking information E) has been sequestered to prevent the leaks of information from them
4. After moving to Switzerland in the 1890’s, Albert Einstein attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, receiving in-depth training in quantitative analysis and developing a foundation for his future work in mathematical physics.
A) attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, receiving in-depth training in quantitative analysis and developing B) attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, receiving in-depth training in quantitative analysis and developed C) attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, received in-depth training in quantitative analysis, and he developed D) attended the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, received in-depth training in quantitative analysis, developing E) attending the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, receiving in-depth training in quantitative analysis, and developing
5. The Daughters of the American Revolution, a volunteer service organization, admits as members only women who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution.
A) admits as members only women who can prove lineal descent B) admit as members only women who can prove lineal descent C) admits as members women who can prove lineal descent - changes meaning D) only admit as members women who can prove lineal descent E) admits as members women who can prove lineal descent only

A. was bouncing back from its 2002 low, U.S. families are still reeling from the recent recession; between B. bounced back from its 2002 low, U.S. families are still reeling from the recent recession, from - needs semicolon C. has bounced back from its 2002 low, U.S. families are still reeling from the recent recession; between D. has bounced back from its 2002 low, U.S. families are still reeling from the recent recession; from E. bounced back from its 2002 low, U.S. families are still reeling from the recent recession; from
I do not know the grammatical reason behind (D) to be correct....just know that between (D) and (E)....D is correct. Would appreciate if someone can explain that.

forgot to mention that "between" is wrong because "2001 to 2004" is not underlined....which means we cannot have "between"....if "between" is used it should be "between 2001 and 2004"..."from X to Y" will work in this case.

A) from the laying of private television cables on public land B) from laying private television cables on the public land C) by the laying of private television cables on the public's land D) from private television cables being laid on public land - no need for being E) by laying private television cables on land that was public
the correct ididom is benefit from - so C and E are out.
btw A and B.
as far as I get the difference - "the" is used to point out specific phrase as well. In this case we`ve got two options: laying of private television cables, and public land
So, in this case the sense of the sentence is to point out the benefits from a particular change, and the change here is the laying of private television cables.
So, A

I would go for A. Here are some actions in a row - receive and develop. Einstein attended particular school and as a result he received ... and developed ... As far as both actions are the result of the initial one - they shuold be in one form - receiving and developing.

The Daughters of the American Revolution is singular because it is an organization. So B and D are out.
