I'm sorry but I think the comparison in OA is not adapted. Nothing is being compared. All it's saying is that both were published in the late eighteen century and both men chose to embark.

I must be missing something... Seems like something is wrong with the structure. It sees like it's saying his friend is Candide not Voltaire. But, out of all three, C is the best. That's not to say the question is correct. Saw this question also in Manhattan Gmat forum and an explanation wasn't given either.

HI I also chose E, because I haven't read it till the end. Which changes the meaning. "caused a sensational scandal, which both men prudently chose to embark on extended vacations in nearby Austria." They chose the scandal ? ))) that very differend from the " cause of a scandal so sensational that both men prudently chose to embark on extended vacations in nearby Austria." which means therefore. However, I totally agree that in Diderot’s factual Encyclopedia and his friend Voltaire’s fictional Candide his friend looks awkward. But I am not native speaker, so can any gmat prof spill the light and help us?

I went for E as well. Not sure how C is correct.
In c x's encyclopedia and y's encyclopia is ... that both men...
How can we use both men here as only their work is refered here.

in option C - Diderot’s factual Encyclopedia and his friend Voltaire’s fictional Candide ..... what is 'his' referring to ?
I understand 'C' is the best to chose among other option but isn't his is referring to wrong anecedote ?
