Puritan fanatics brought to civil and military affairs a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose that some writers have though inconsistent with their religious zeal, but which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it.

(A) but which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it

(B) but which were in fact a natural outgrowth of it

(C) but which were in fact natural outgrowths of it

(D) but it was in fact a natural outgrowth of them

(E) which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it

This has been discussed many times before.. but I am reopening it for discussion as I am not convinced with the OA.

The answer has to be C. Here are the reasons why:
A, D, E are out because "a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose" call for a plural verb "were" instead of "was."

B is out because "a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose" is plural, and hence requires a plural noun, "outgrowths." "A coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose" is an outgrowth? That's just wrong!

SC 975: Puritan fanatics [#permalink] New post 08 Mar 2007, 09:11
I may be digressing here...Does the word "outgrowth" have a plural? Is "outgrowths" really a plural of outgrowth?

IMO, outgrowth has no plural

Refer to Webster dictionary - it gives no plural form for word outgrowth http://209.161.33.50/dictionary/outgrowth

In that case shouldn't (b) be the answer?

Outgrowth has a plural form. Try googling "outgrowths" and you will find plenty of scientific texts that utilize it. B cannot be a right answer. "A coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose" call for a plural noun.
