Pursuing CFA designation [#permalink] New post 03 Mar 2013, 15:22
I wanted some opinions on this question- if my ultimate goal is to get both an MBA and work my way through getting the CFA designation.. would it be better to get a Finance related MBA or go with something a little different like perhaps Economics? I guess, overall, there are 2 mindsets that I have- getting the CFA designation is a lot of work but if successful it makes a clear statement that you know a lot about finance. in which case does it slightly devalue your MBA in Finance? Or is simply better to point to both the Finance MBA and CFA and make the case of being an expert in your field?

Please note: this is something very much in the beginning stages of being planned. Just wanted some other points of view on it.

Thank you.

It really depends on what you want to do post MBA. If you want to go work on the buy-side in asset management then yea go get it. Otherwise you don't really need it for most career paths in finance.

You could knock out most of it while you are doing your MBA. You will cover pretty much everything on the CFA your first year of business school and can easily pass the level 1 test. Same pretty much goes for Level 2 (a little more studying). It does make recruiting easier though if you have a few levels completed, or passed all 3 before you get your MBA. As for were you should focus your class work, honestly an MBA isn't like undergraduate. Pretty much as soon as you start people are going to tell you to go get a job so your class selection will really depend on what field you are recruiting for. Recruiting for something finance related? Then yea you will take finance and accounting classes until you got that job locked in.

Hope that helps
