Assuming sending deposit is same as enrolling,

Those who enroll = 0.8x0.15 Those who submit app

So, 1 and 2 together are sufficient.

I'd go with E

(1) insufficient because we don't know if this fifteen percent come from 50 percent of people who inquire about admission
(2) insufficient we don't know if all of those 80 percent enroll in classes.

should be C cuz 50 of inquirer apply.
lets suppose the number of inquirer = x.

from i, 0.15 (0.5) x are accepted by the university. but not sure about admission.
from ii, 0.8 of accepted are admitted to the university. but what % of applicants are accepted? dont no.

i and ii, addmitted = 0.8 (0.15) (0.5x) = 0.06 of x or 6%.

I'm still not sure about the answer. GMAT always plays with words.

Sorry guys.. the OA is E. I also chose C first. Does it mean here that submitting the deposit is not the same as enrolling in the classes...

yes my theory worked this time. Don't assume anything. If it is not said, no matter how obvious it may look, it's not a fact.

because it does not mean that if University has accepted means you enrol there. What if you are accepted in 3 universities ? Will you enrol in all 3 ? No right ? hence 1 is in-suff.

chose E but for a different reason,

We know from the statement that 50% of the people who 'enquire' about policies apply, but we are not told nything about the people who do no enquire but apply !
