"can" shows the possibility whereas "may" shows the possibility.

Might/may- Uncertainty
Can- possibility.
In this case the sentence implies possiblity as I understand!
What say?

"You can become the president of United States but you may not".
This sentence shows that you have the potential to become the president but its not guaranteed that you will become the president.

Student: Teacher, can i go the bathroom?

This means that the student by his locomotive functions can walk through the bathroom, but he may not because the class is still on!

Very nice explanation, very well understood. The subject "can" get the apartment but if the interview goes well he "might".

Q. If my new job interview works out just right, I might be able to afford that nice apartment
by the park.
a) I might be able to afford that nice apartment by the park
b) I could be able to rent the really nice apartment overlooking the park
c) the chances are I can be affording the apartment in the park
d) perhaps that nice apartment by the park should be affordable
e) I think I can be able to afford that nice apartment by the park

This question is from Practice Test 2 , GMAT Club Grammar Book.
As I understood, might is used for unreal situations and the situation above is a real situation (conditional).
Can/May/Will/Must are use in such situations.
Shouldn't the answer be (e) ?

i might -implies may be (possibility) subject to the condition his interview goes well
i think i can be able--shows ability. So meaning changes and moreover e is verbose due to redundancy ' i think i can be able to ' can=be able to

Might is the past form of May, isnt it? This question makes me confused btwn A and E

Moreover, might be able to is kind of repeat, it is not concise because both might and able to mean a possiblity

C,D and E are out because they are not in the patern if do, then do/may/can

both A and B are correct in that might be and coulc be are good

but B change the meaning of A. while A is correct, why change A

that is the reason for which b is wrong

I think MAY provides eligibility and can provides possibility but both show probability :) .
Correct me if i am wrong.
I chose A.

All of the above, highlighted in red are awfully constructed.
There are only two viable choices A and D
now ,
an If statement is of the form if x ,then y , but then can be omitted
the differentiating factor between A and D imo is that of voice and usage of "should"
A is active and conveys the intended meaning using might (hypothetical condition)
D on the other hand is passive.

therefore,
A

So Active voice answers are preferred in GMAT? Because I have seen other posts where active voice answers were preferred to passive voice answers
