Q31)Linsey has been judged to be a bad songwriter simply because her lyrics typically are disjointed and subjective. This judgment is ill founded, however, since the writings of many modern novelists typically are disjointed and subjective and yet these novelists are widely held to be good writers.

Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

(A) Disjointed and subjective writing has a comparable effect in modern novels and in songs.
(B) Some readers do not appreciate the subtleties of the disjointed and subjective style adopted by modern novelists.
(C) Song lyrics that are disjointed and subjective have at least as much narrative structure as any other song lyrics do.
(D) A disjointed and subjective style of writing is usually more suitable for novels and song lyrics than it is for any other written works.
(E) The quality of Linsey’s songs is better judged by quality of their lyrics than by the quality of their musical form.

IMO A.

linsey's song writting has been judged bad.
But author is deriving the conclusion that its not bad because it has the same characteristics as those found in the novels of good writters.

So assumption has to relate that song writting and book writting follow a similar pattern.
option 1 says that disjoint writting has a comparable effect in both the things.
Since disjoint writtng can make a good novel and disjoint writting has the same effect on song writting also so disjoint writting can make a good song writter also.

Answer "A"

style of writing lyrics and writing novels must be assumed similar.

The argument assumes that the standards applied to novel writing apply to songwriting. Specifically, 'disjointedness and subjectivity', two qualities esteemed in novel writing must also be esteemed in songwriting.

(A) Disjointed and subjective writing has a comparable effect in modern novels and in songs.

This answer choices speaks to the assumption that songwriting and novel writing are the same in terms of disjointed and subjective writing. The wording 'comparable effect' shows that the two can be weighed the same across the two genres. An assumption, without which, the argument falls apart.

(B) Some readers do not appreciate the subtleties of the disjointed and subjective style adopted by modern novelists.

Does not refer to songwriting.

(C) Song lyrics that are disjointed and subjective have at least as much narrative structure as any other song lyrics do.

This answer choice brings in another variable - narrative structure, and is thus out of scope. And narrative structure alone does not mean that disjointedness and subjectivity function in the same way in the two genres.

(D) A disjointed and subjective style of writing is usually more suitable for novels and song lyrics than it is for any other written works.

'Other written works' unnecessarily broadens the scope.

(E) The quality of Linsey’s songs is better judged by quality of their lyrics than by the quality of their musical form.

Does not focus on the issue, but focuses instead on musical form vs. lyrics.

Argument evaluation:
Lisey's lyrics typically are disjointed and subjective => Linsey is judged to be bad songwriter

Conclusion = This judgment is ill founded because the writings of many modern novelists typically are disjointed and subjective + these novelists are widely held to be good writers.

Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

(A) Disjointed and subjective writing has a comparable effect in modern novels and in songs.
If disjointed and subjective writing has not a comparable effect in modern novels and in songs, the evidence that prove writing of many modern novelists are widely held to be good writers is unjustified.
(B) Some readers do not appreciate the subtleties of the disjointed and subjective style adopted by modern novelists.
Whether or not readers appreciate the subtleties of the disjointed and subjective style adopted by modern novelists does not relate to the conclusion of the argument.
(C) Song lyrics that are disjointed and subjective have at least as much narrative structure as any other song lyrics do.
Whether or not song lyrics are narrative structure as any other song lyrics does not relate to the conclusion.
(D) A disjointed and subjective style of writing is usually more suitable for novels and song lyrics than it is for any other written works.
This choice is also irrelevant
(E) The quality of Linsey’s songs is better judged by quality of their lyrics than by the quality of their musical form.
Also be irrelevant

Premise:
Linsey lyrics are disjointed and subjective ----> Linsey been judged as bad songwriter
Many modern novelists writings are disjointed and subjective -----> Novelists are widely held as good writers

Conclusion:
Judgement against Linsey is ill founded

Only when the work of modern novelists and song lyrics is comparable and their is effect is almost equal, can the work of Linsey be concluded as good.

Only Option A depicts that.

Straight A.

The argument would be relevant if song lyrics and modern novels have some basis for comparison with respect to disjointedness and subjective writing.

Cheers,
Der alte Fritz.
