A. prevented from dissipating its acoustic energy as a
result of
Eliminate; modifier error. Sounds like distances are prevented which makes no sense.

B. prevented from having its acoustic energy dissipated by
same as A.

C. its acoustic energy prevented from dissipating by

D. its acoustic energy prevented from being dissipated as
a result of

E preventing its acoustic energy from dissipating by
Eliminate; changes the meaning of the sentence; 'the travel' is not 'preventing'

So we are left w/ C & D. I was quite confused b/w the 2 but I picked C because it conveys the meaning better. In choice D, it sounds like dissipation was caused by the boundaries in the ocean[due to the use of 'as a result of']; instead, we want to convey that the dissipation was prevented by the boundaries in the ocean.

A: prevented.. this is a misplaced modifier. What prevents the acoustic energy from dissipating... the boundries... this sentence makes it sound like the "sound can travel...." is modifiying this. Incorrect.
B: same problem
E: even more obvious of a modifier error here.
D: use of being and longer than C.

C it is. no modifier error and concise.

E should be correct. Use of adverbial modifier which modifies the sentence before it. Sentence says sound can...., the sentence after the comma modifies what was said before. Think of it this way if you take away the second sentence still the first should make sense, that is second sentence is a modifying phrase. E properly uses "its" for sound and shows present tense and matches the tense in the first sentence.

A similar example:

The cameras of the Voyager II spacecraft detected six small, previously unseen moons circling Uranus, doubling to the 12 the number of satellites now known to orbit the distant planet. OG 11 Qn 71.

Hope this helps.
