Quant drives me crazy [#permalink] New post 25 Oct 2012, 19:23
Hey everyone:

I am planning to sit for GMAT within 6 months. The purpose of sitting for it is to apply for a PhD in the US or Singapore. Gmat verbal seems fine, but the quant is not so friendly with me.

Can anyone advise me here what materials I should go for to sharpen the basic math. Also if anyone here is doing PhD, can help me out giving info about his institution.

Thanks

Well, I'm not sure whether it matters which graduate program that you apply to in this case. You still have to perform well on the test.

Math gave me trouble at first, while verbal was fine. The Manhattan math series is a good study guide for understanding the concepts involved in the test, but these books need to be supplemented with quality question practice. The OG material is usually sufficient for this, but I needed more easy problems to feel comfortable before moving on to more difficult questions. For those in a similar situation, I strongly recommend Jeff Sackmann's math sets. Another tactic that worked for me included rereading the math guidebooks over and over until they became boringly easy.

As for verbal, just make sure that you do not become too complacent about it. The verbal section is more challenging than the OG books imply and you will be mentally tired by the time you reach this section on the real test.
