Quant study tips to reach a 50 from 47. [#permalink]
06 May 2011, 00:01
Guys I got a 47 in quant in attempt 1 in december. That was in fact the highest I ever scored in Gmat prep as well as MGMAT practice cats. I am planning a reattempt in July 2011. What should I eat to jack up my quant score to 49-50 ? I am an engineer and believe in myself however, I have never been very keen on quant recently. So I have recently bought grockit which creates the right atmosphere for reluctant quant solvers like me. Material used last time for Q47 : og-12(twice) kaplan 800(too easy) manhattan guides-all 5(excellent-i owe much of my score to these) MGMAT 5 cats (too harsh but good at the end of the day) Material lines up for July 2011: repeat all material used in attempt 1 and add below : some topic such as number systems from a CAT(indian MBA test) book. Grockit online practice GMAT club tests(all) og-Green supplement(looks useless-too easy) I have over 2 months. Any inputs folks ?

In order for your GMAT performance to truly have meaning, the verbal score needs to increase. A 51Q, 34V will not appeal that much to business schools. So the first books I can suggest are: Manhattan SC and Powerscore CR. Use all three OG books: OG 12, OG Quant, and OG Verbal. But once you completely finish these books, then move on to other material. For verbal, one could advance to some LSAT material. And now for the math portion of the test. Reaching the very top requires complete familiarity with the concepts and speed. The GMATClub tests should help a good bit, as well as Jeff Sackmann's Extreme Challenge set. Also, find out where you are weakest in math and put extra effort in those areas. For speed, gradually increase the tempo for answering questions.

If you want to increase your verbal (which may give you more bang for your buck,) focus on the verbal books mentioned in the previous posts. However, I think you would see significant improvement just by reading!
Pick up a few classic english novels and commit to finishing and understanding them. This is the kind of exercise that will make the verbal section come more naturally.

gmatclub tests are legendary in their ability to target 700-800 probs and raise 45 to 50.

thanks guys but I am alrerady playing at around 34-36 in verbal, and already have a firm plan in place to even improve this by a couple more points in the next 60 days. But quant 49 is a must to score above 700-710 safely IMO. With the same verbal score I got last time if I raise the quant by 3 points I will already be talking 700. And targeting a raised quant score is a safer option. And will the GMAT club tests alone suffice for entire quant prep to reach 50 from 47 ?? I dont think there are that many of them ??

There are 25 tests, which total to almost 1000 math questions. So there are indeed many tests and questions. But also review the concepts in the guidebooks alongside these tests.

I'm in agreement that you should focus on verbal. Your score is lopsided, and a school may not like that. Also, the higher you score the tougher the questions. A 51 level quant question should be much harder to wrap your head around than a 40 level verbal question! Posted from my mobile device

I gave the first GMAT club test, got 27/37. Felt good. However I believe the tests will get tougher as I progress ?

By the time you reach test# 15/16 you will already see huge improvements.. but make sure you review each problem carefully. Not just the ones you get wrong. If you consistently get not more than 5 wrong in GMAT Club tests, you're talking 50-51. Best of luck

If you look at my practice scores, I've shown some progress in Q, pretty much the only Q practice I've been doing is the GMATClub tests. So, take that as you will.

Thank u people, almost a month into prep for my second attempt. I've reached Gclub test 4.Scored 30/37 . and a 50 in a princeton review cat,(35/37 :D. Ya i know princeton its too easy ) But took first MGMAT yest and still got 46. MGMAT cat maths is like an engineering entrance maths which I gave 8 years back. Still cant tame it. .

MGMAT quant is unreasonably tough. Timing just goes out of the window. I have taken the GMAT twice and I can definitely vouch (like many other forum members) for the fact the difficulty level on the real thing is nowhere as compared with MGMATs.. so if you're scoring 47-48 on MGMAT, you're actually doing quite well. Also I would say that check how you're doing on the first 30-32 questions as it is likely that you are not left with any time for the last few questions as 75 minutes on MGMAT is enough only for that many questions, IMO. Especially if you're scoring more than 45 and likely seeing tougher questions.

really? I took all 6 MGMAT, scoring Q44 to Q47. I did think it was hard, but after taking my first powerprep and getting Q47, I didnt feel like the MGMAT was much harder. But good to know it is considered to be at a higher difficulty than lower.

My highest ever quant score was in MGMAT-4(47) last time which I timed for 2.5 min/ question. Other MGMATs were 42-45(some timed at 75 min some at 90-No pausing). I was always comfortable(in timing ) with mgmat/gmat prep verbal so thats outta discussion here. Humphy, are u talking about powerprep ets one ? thats quite weird. i've heard people scoring high in that easily since it has all OG q's. Gmat prep is actual thing which gives a real indication as u can see in my Jan case. BTW my gmat club scores are as follows : I am taking once every 2-3 daYS. 1>27/37- 53%ile 1>27/37- 39%ile 3>24/37- 40%ile 4>30/37- 69%ile 5>26/37 58%ile (tons of prob nd P&C's)

if it helps, i never scored more than 50-55 percentile on GMAT club tests, scoring around 15-20 percentile on a couple don't worry about the percentiles, these tests are taken by some real stalwarts. Instead, focus on how many you get right. More than 30 correct on a consistent basis and you're shooting for glory

bblast - yea I just took the mba.com one with the 2 free tests thing yesterday, I think thats the "powerprep". In reviewing what I got wrong, it was mostly stupid mistakes, I think I just need to slow down. The point being that I can see it being possible that the MGMAT is on the whole a bit harder, but I don't think by much. If it is any indication, the GMAT Club score predictor has a -10 pt estimator against the real GMAT, indicating that the MGMAT may be slightly *easier* than the real thing. Maybe this penalty is due to some other factors that I just don't know about. gmatpapa - yea I take those GMAT Club tests with a grain of salt. They need to improve the percentile calculation. It does not account for people who drill it over and over and eventually get 100%, so there is a HUGE skew towards 100%. Seeing as how I usually get 22 to 27 ish correct on GC tests, I think your estimate of 30+ = Q50 ish is quite accurate, as I bounce around Q43 to Q47. anyways, its home stretch for me. thanks for the insight.
