Query on Strategy Consulting programs [#permalink] New post 19 Jul 2004, 13:17
Can you throw some light upon B-Schools offering programs on Strategic consulting ? I myself an IT guy with 2 yrs of experience currently? What is the eligibility for the program? Can i fit in ?

Can i look at any top B schools i can look at (assuming i get a score over 700)? My undergrad GPA is above 3.5 and i am sure i can provide sufficient instances highlighting my leadership abilities.

Any suggestions of B schools would also be helpful.

Regards,
Amrith

Getting into a majority of the top schools will allow you to get into Strategy Consulting. Schools that immediately come to mind include:
Harvard, Stanford, Darden, Sloan, Kellogg, and Wharton. And to a lesser extent Johnson and Michigan.

Year after year strategy consulting seems to be a top destination for graduates of these schools. There are a decent number of people who try to make the transition from IT consulting to strategy consulting. The question is less can you make the transition once you get into school, but rather can you get into the school.

If you have a GMAT 700+ and a 3.5 then that's a start, but you still have several other criteria to fill.

I would certainly include Chicago and Columbia in this list of schools.

Are you asking about a specific concentration in Strategic Consulting?

Yes I am well aware of the fact that i need to differentiate myself. But I have anchored specific Knowedge Management programs across my company and was responsible for showcasing the business potential of mid range computing to my Business Managers.

Also in my previous organization I had introduced several best practices in Knowledege sharing and initiated a Knowledge Management program which since then has been widely implemented across the org.

I have also played a key part of several other org. wide initiatives which have currently been implemented very successfully.

Hypothetically speaking if i do get admitted to a top B school what other skills/areas/roles and capabilities would I be expected to possess?

Once you get admitted the key becomes showing that you're absolutely passionate about consulting. This means learning about the different firms and how they view themselves. Learning about the case interview process and mastering that. Attending as many consulting events as possible and being able to network with current employees. Have some thought as to how you might be able to fit in with the firm(s) and be able to speak about how you would be able to add value to the firm(s). Join the consulting club. Speak with 2nd years who achieved internships at firms that you might want to work for.

Once you get into a top school, it's relatively easy to secure a strategy consulting firm offer (these days), assuming that you put forth an concerted effort from the beginning.
