Query regarding E-Rater, gmatawa.com, & findscore; 2/10 [#permalink] New post 19 Oct 2013, 11:17
Q1. How important is spelling mistakes and a few grammatical errors?

- Few sources on net tell that some spelling mistakes won't matter so hope thats fine
- but what if there are 1 or 2 bad grammatical sentences
Gmat AWA (gmatawa.com) rated the essay as 5.15 despite a few big errors!!! SO I am not really sure if I should use this tool at all?
Findscore gave it as 5
SO I am not really sure if I should use this tool at all?

Q2 Plz rate if you can:
Strike outs: spelling mistakes
Underline: possible grammatical errors

Of all the cities in their region, Beaumont and Fletcher are showing the fastest growth in the number of new businesses. Therefore, Avia should establish a commuter route between them as a means of countering recent losses on its main passenger routes. And to make the commuter route more profitable from the outset, Avia should offer a 1/3 discount on tickets purchased within two days of the flight. Unlike tickets bought earlier, discount tickets will be nonrefundable, and so gain from their sale will be greater

The planning department concludes that by establishing a new commuter route between two fastest growing cities and by offering a discount on non-refundable tickets bought within two days of the flight on that route, more profits can be made by Avia Airlines therbycountering recent loses made on the main route. The reasoning is flawed on couple of counts and ignores a few key points which should be evalutedbefore arriving at a logical conclusion.

First, the assumption that non-refundable discounted tickets will generate more profit from their sale is simplistic. The business planning department is assuming that as the discount tickets are nonrefundable, profits can be earned when a traveller who had booked such a ticket does not travel. The problem here is that, someone who buys a ticket within two days of traveling will have very less probability to not travel. Even if there is an urgent reason behind a person not traveling, the chances of the person canceling the ticket are minimum because he will not be getting the refund. As a result, the probabailityof airlines selling that seat to another potential traveler is very less. Hence, the seat which was sold for 1/3 discount will invariableresult in more loss.

Second, the routing plan assumes that the commuter teafficbetween Beaument and Fletcher will be high. The argument does not present any data to support this claim. While the two cities are seeing the fastest growth of business, but it is not necessary that growth is happening in interrelated business. It could be possible that one city is seeing growth in consumer goods business while the other in defenceequipment business. In such a case, the commuter traffic between two cities would not be as much as expected and instead of making profits, the airlines could end up operating empty planes, thereby increasing the loss.

In conclusion, the argument is serioslyflawed and should provide deatilsabout the commuter traffic between two cities as well as take into account cancellation statistics for travellersbooking their tickets within two days of travel. Only if the reasoning suggested, can be supported by data it can be considered a viable plan
