If you apply for a school in R1 and get in, but let's say you prefer a R2 school better and want to wait for that decision.

How long does the admit offer last? Will you be able to wait until R2 decisions? Or do people just send in a deposit and secure the R1 admit spot, and then ditch the R1 offer if they get into a better school R2?

Most schools show deadlines for accepting or declining admits and when deposits are due on their websites. Look around the webpage and it most likely will give you some time frame.

Some schools deadlines are before R2 information is released others it is after...its a school by school basis. Some people make deposits and if they get into a school they prefer later on whether in another round or off the WL they just withdraw and give up that deposit money...in the grand scheme of things unless its Columbia's 6K its not a big deal to most people.
