Question about MGMAT 700-800 level CAT questions [#permalink]
03 Jul 2011, 14:21
So far I have taken 3 of the manhattan CAT practice exams spaced 3 weeks apart.
1. 630 - 36Q 40V 2. 700 - 44Q 41V 3. 740 - 47Q 45V
As you can see my verbal scores have been very strong from the beginning, and my Quant is steadily improving.
Initially, in this 3rd CAT, I was getting mostly 700-800 level questions in the verbal section, but the test ended with a string of 600-700 level questions in a row even though I only missed one of the last fifteen questions and my estimated percentile rank was 99% throughout much of the test - including the last 7 questions.
Is it possible that the question banks that the CAT's draw from are running out of high level questions after three tests?
I am also nervous that this could happen in the Quant section as well because even though my quant was only a meager 47, ALL of the questions I was given were 700-800 level except for four (including the first one). I wonder if I could run out of difficult quant questions in the next CAT or two.
Was the test ending with so many lower level questions a fluke or are the number of difficult questions limited like this?

Having only taken 3 of the 6 CATs, I doubt the algorithm has run out of high level questions. By the 5th or 6th, that may be possible. But given your raw Q and V scores, unlikely at this point. Were you scoring 51/47 for 3 CATs in a row, perhaps. There's probably a MGMAT employee roaming the forums who can answer this better than I can.

Thanks for your input. I hope you are right.
By the way, I am only referring to the verbal section as possibly running out of questions. That 45 on verbal is the 99th percentile according to the breakout. Even the 41 on verbal that I got on the first test was the 91st percentile, and looking over my results, about 2/3rds of the questions from that test I received were 700-800 level.
But yeah I see your point, hopefully in offering 6 full CAT's, they would have enough high level questions to actually cover the 6 tests.
When you review the answers you can see where the algorithm was ranking you after every question so it just seems weird that the algorithm is saying I'm in the 99th percentile throughout, but ends up giving me a bunch of 600-700 level questions to finish out the test, when in the first portion of the test I was given nearly all 700-800 level questions.

It happened with me in MGMAT1 ( got 720)...almost all questions were 700+ I got tons of wrong but still 720 Also...I have invariably noticed most of the folks gettting better in MGMAT4,5,6...I now worried that your inference is right on the other hand, how does it matter....these are for practice only....if not finding tough....one cant try Kaplan

There's probably a MGMAT employee roaming the forums who can answer this better than I can. Manhattan for some reason caps the Verbal score at 45. Even if you get every single question right it will give you a 45. That is why it seems to be pretty inaccurate at judging scores of people who are very good at verbal, it generally will underestimate their scores by a wide margin.
