is the conclusion of the argument
E says Curbing U.S. resource consumption will significantly retard world resource depletion.
Negate E
Curbing U.S. resource consumption will NOT significantly retard world resource depletion.
If curbing us resource consumption is not going to slow down the depletion, the expected correction will not happen.
Conclusion falls apart and hence the answer
A simply is a possible assumption but not a necessary assumption and also out of scope as we are not dealing with per capita usage or any thing as such

How can the answer be E? This question makes little sense unless I am mis-reading the meanings of retarded and curbing.
The stem is concerned with rectifying the quick rate of resource depletion. Based upon Answer choice E, by reducing consumption of resources, US WILL significantly reduce world resource depletion. First issue - Answer choice does not talk about rate of depletion.
Finally, how can this sentence be logicall valid -
To correct high rate of depletion of resources, since "Curbing U.S. resource consumption will significantly retard world resource depletion," US must maintain present levels of resource consumption.
Someone please explain how with the provided OA, can the sentence's conclusion be supported by the assumption.
