Radio interferometry is a technique for studying details of celestial objects that combines signals intercepted by widely spaced radio telescopes. This technique requires ultraprecise timing, exact knowledge of the locations of the telescopes, and sophisticated computer programs. The successful interferometric linking of an Earth-based radio telescope with a radio telescope on an orbiting satellite was therefore a significant technological accomplishment.
Which of the following can be correctly inferred from the statements above?
(A) Special care was taken in the launching of the satellite so that the calculations of its orbit would be facilitated.
(B) The signals received on the satellite are stronger than those received by a terrestrial telescope.
(C) The resolution of detail achieved by the satellite-Earth interferometer system is inferior to that achieved by exclusively terrestrial systems.
(D) The computer programs required for making use of the signals received by the satellite required a long time for development.
(E) The location of an orbiting satellite relative to locations on Earth can be well enough known for interferometric purposes.

Acc to me E..since it fulfills one of the requirement for the technique...location is an important factor for the technique and determining the relative locations results in a successful accomplishment.

OA E

A and E were very close but I choose E.

All the other choices but E does give outside information irrelevant to argument such as "special care" (A), "signals" (B), "resolution" (C), "long time for development" (D).

You guys seem to be fine with this one, but just to rid your mind of any doubts, remember the following.

Inference questions repeat information that was given (usually information in the conclusion!).

The conclusion is that the interferometric linking was successful. One of the premises is that for interferometric linking to work, the distance between the satellites must be known.

Any emotional/psychological activity on the part of researchers (like the researchers 'took care') is NOT information given in the passage. If it was not said (in one form or another) in the argument, it is not a good inference to draw.

For me it's A. The 'special care' mention in A alludes to the 'significant technological achievement'. Since positioning is critical for success and was the product of this significant technological achievement, I'd choose A.

With E, if positioning can be well enough known for interferometric purposes, then this could not allude to the significant tech achievement.

well explained Sarai. It is now clear why E is the OA.

hi
I dont know why I was tempted to go for D.....but I read the following earlier as well in this group

Inference questions repeat information that was given (usually information in the conclusion!).

So picked E

harder inference contains much information but requires us to infer from just a pieces of information, a situation which is in real life.

I try to prethink an inference before going to answer choices but do so not exhautively. if I can not prethink an inference , I go to answer choices. prethinking help better understand the argument.

e-gmat experts offer many helpful advise and articles. but I do not see the e gmat posting in CR section.

RI technique combines signals intercepted by widely spaced radio telescopes. RI technique requires 1) ultraprecise timing 2)exact knowledge of the locations of the telescopes 3) sophisticated computer programs. Hence successful implementation of RI technique was a significant technological accomplishment (We have been able to implement it).

A) Incorrect - Nowhere is it mentioned/suggested that the manner in which the satellite is launched influences the ability to calculate of it's orbit. Hence, special care is not required for calculation of it's orbit.

B) Incorrect - There is no mention/suggestion of strength of signal. Out of scope

C) Incorrect - There is no mention/suggestion of resolution. Out of scope

D) Incorrect - Computer programs were developed. They were sophisticated. But may not have taken time to develop. Even with extremely high complexity, a brilliant programmer could have done it in a day. There is no way to infer that it took time.

E) Correct - Fact1: RI has been successfully implemented + Fact 2: RI requires exact knowledge of the locations of the telescopes. Together they imply E) The location of an orbiting satellite relative to locations on Earth can be well enough known for interferometric purposes
