The following appeared as part of an article in a magazine devoted to regional life:
“Corporations should look to the city of Helios when seeking new business opportunities or a new location. Even in
the recent recession, Helios’s unemployment rate was lower than the regional average. It is the industrial center of
the region, and historically it has provided more than its share of the region’s manufacturing jobs. In addition, Helios
is attempting to expand its economic base by attracting companies that focus on research and development of
innovative technologies.”
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.
The argument claims that Helios is a center of industrial activities and has lower unemployment; Furthermore, It is attracting companies that focus on research and development of technologies; therefore, Companies ,which are exploring new market for business opportunities should go in Helios. Stated in this way The argument fail to mentioned several key factors ,on the basis of which it could be evaluated. The conclusion relies on assumption ,for which there is no clear evidence; clearly , The argument is rather weak ,unconvincing and has several flaws.
First, The argument promptly assumes that Helios is a center of industrial activities and has lower employment rate; Therefore , Companies seeking new markets should enter in Helios. This statement is a stretch and not substantiated in any way. Author fail to mentioned several key points, which companies evaluate in their planning in new markets. Such as, man power in vicinity, availability of basic necessities for a business and most important Govt. policy in that part of land. When ever companies invest in any part of world companies want friendly Govt. policy and availability of basic necessities.
Clearly, without providing these kind of information it’s hard to reach any kind of decision. the argument could have been much clear if it explicitly stated that all mentioned points support the author point.
Second, the argument claims that Helios is expanding its economic base through attracting companies, which do research and development programs ;therefore, Helios is great potential market for all companies. It is again weak statement. There are examples in the part of world, where only same type of companies do their operations;such as, silicon valley is highly attractive for technology companies and there companies got some sort of favorable policies .another example is well street .it is full of investment banks and there is no place for manufacturing plants; Therefore, before making decision this must be considered .Infect, It is not clear at all that what kind or market is there in Helios? If The argument had provided evidence that these kind of markets available in Helios the argument could have been more convincing.
Finally,What about the products, which are in demand there? Do Helios have good quality high way for dealing with raw material for companies? What if Helios’s vicinity has more potential than Helios? With providing the convincing answer to these question ,one is left with the impression that the claim is more of wish full thinking rather than substantive evidence.
In conclusion,The argument is flawed for the mentioned reasons and is therefore unconvincing .It could be considerably strengthened if the author clearly mentioned all the relevant facts.
