If an automobile averaged 22.5 miles per gallon of gasoline, approximately how many kilometers per liter of gasoline did the automobile average? (1 mile = 1.6 kilometers and 1 gallon = 3.8 liters, both rounded to the nearest tenth.)

A. 3.7
B. 9.5
C. 31.4
D. 53.4
E. 136.8

22.5 miles is 22.5 x 1.6 = 36 km.

1 gallon is 3.8 liters.

So the approximate rate, in km/liter, is 36/3.8 = 9.473.

\(\frac{22.5 }{ 1 gallon} = \frac{1.6 killometers }{ 1 gallon} = \frac{1 gallon}{3.8 liters}\) = \(\frac{20 * 2 }{4} = 10\)

Re: If an automobile averaged 22.5 miles per gallon of gasoline [#permalink]
How can I calculate 22.5 * 1.6 quickly?
I did (225 / 10) * (16 / 10) = (15 * 15 * 16) / 100 thinking this was the quickest way but it took me long to multiply 225 * 16 (could not do the calculation in my head).

Thank you :)
