A has "accept" incorrectly used.
B sounds funny to me from a tense perspective.
C Tense problem
D sounds the least of all the evils to me, I'd go with D
E Dunno why but this sounds funny.

I would pick D if I had to :(

D.....I know it uses the present perfect but I can justify my answer choice if it is the OA. If not, no point wasting eveyone's time.

Instead of is used for nouns. Rather than is used for phrases.
Since "accept the conventional.....was flat" is a phrase. C,E are out.

Whether is always prefered by GMAT over "if"....A and B are out.

That leaves us with D....but hey !......that is so wierd. Well, it is not so wierd
if this sentence was spoken in the context of the "present"...columbus is currently on the voyage. Our intelligence pre-supposes that everything about columbus should talk about the past. What if sentence is part of a play narration ?.....ENUFF said..grammar is not my forte'.

the other problem with A and B is...

the modifier is not modifying chris col....it appears to me as if it is modifying King and queen..

I also agree "whether" is preferred to "if"

this is best approach. i also came down to C and D. my approach is whether vs if and we should pick "whether" because columbus had two options to choose. this eliminated A/B/E. between C and D, D is better as explained by ihotface.
