Hi,
The answer "D" is infered from the part where it is mentioned in the last few lines where its is mentioned that if aspen trees donot grow periodically than coniferous trees will grow and block the sunlight needed by Aspen trees, hence the groove will loose access to sunlight if aspen trees donot grow periodically

The question is what happens when Aspen trees fails to regenerate??

From the Last part of passage we understand that:

When Aspen grooves dies --------> it fails to send necessary hormones to regenerate --------> result other trees take up the space and block sunlight for aspen.

Hence answer is D.
