A doesnt sound good but it sounds better than the rest

in E you cant say "local witnesses are difficult to locate and reticent" because it doesnt make sense

whats the source of this question?

Thanks Bigtreezl

The source for the above question is Old Test papers.
These have been labeled test codes
This particular one is from test code 14.. I think.

But.. it would be even more helpful if you could explain why E doesn't sound right.. I thought it sounded parallel

hbs2012 (I do hope you make it to hbs :) All the best)

Ok now, we can eliminate E because it has the ambiguous "they". Who are they ?? locals ? detectives ?
Using this we can eliminate D as well.

Choice A has the redundant "and are". It is better to say Locals are x,y and z
Choice B "to be" and "and are" is not parallel.

This leaves us with choice C ( OA is C, Please check the answer key, Test 14 Pg.33 Section 6 10th question)

This makes sense. I was wondering how A could be right.

in E. 'that local witnesses are difficult to locate and reticent, and they are'

the usage of 'that' makes it clear that 'witnesses'is the subject for the later clause. hence they can be used to refer to witnesses. but the problem with this question is pure parallelism. choice C is clear winner because choice E adds a pronoun that is destroys the parallelism

Re: RC: Federal Authorities, local witnesses [#permalink] New post 12 Sep 2010, 05:39
The correct answer is a.

choice E is TOTALLY wrong because 'they' here refers to federal authorities. you may ask why? it is so because a (comma and) structure shows a prallel clause and refers back to federal authrities. same with D

apart from the meaing change without the usage of 'that' in A and B, C corrects one more thing , i.e., ||ism

difficult to locate, reticent, and suspicious of

the parts marked in red are parallel. 'to locate' is an adverbial modifier that modifies 'difficult'. the 'to' in this case isnt the infinitive parallel structure u r looking for.

Re: RC: Federal Authorities, local witnesses [#permalink] New post 15 Sep 2010, 07:17
this choice is simplt NOT correct. infact this is a sucker answer choice. let me try again.

federal authorities is the subject of the clause, 'have found' is the main verb and 'local withness' is the object of the main clause. now 'local witness' can not be object of the first part(Federal authorities involved in the investigation have found the local witnesses) of the sentence and at the same time be subject of the 2nd part(the local witnesses are difficult to locate, reticent, and are suspicious of strangers)
. we need a subordinator 'that' to solve this issue.

well even if u do not spot this grammatical errror, the biggest problem here is that meaning is nonsensical. as u know whenever and is used, u need to check for parallel structure. when you check parallel for 'and are', u will find the verb 'have found'. so the clause predeeding 'have found' applies even to 'are'.

so the meaning u get is
Federal authorities involved in the investigation are suspicious of strangers. this clause makes no sense
