ready to begin applications-would love your evaluation [#permalink] New post 08 Sep 2006, 16:07
How are you?

I am a 22 yr old African-American male

3.3 GPA from elite college-
Economics & Finance
Minor in Chinese (Mandarin)

690 GMAT (45q 40v)

Major deficit- I am senior finishing up 5 yr program ( i know, another one of these undergrad guys  )

Counter to this drawback:

B/c of the program, I have served about 1.5 years of full time work. 1 year with financial trading firms and another 6 months with a major investment management company. I also have examples where my ideas/leadership has made each of my departments that more efficient. I have also worked as a weekend branch manager at a commercial branch part-time. Recommenders will help clarify.

Activities
Volunteered teaching children at local church, Business college senator to Student Government, Financial chair of engineering club, President of Activities club, assistant strategic planner to the campaign of Raj Bhaktra for US Representative (He is one of the previous contestants of the show "the Apprentice), I am also very close to fluent in Mandarin.

I am looking to apply to:
Harvard
Cornell
Columbia
Yale
Dartmouth

I know my age and experience might hurt, but do these factors at least 'kinda' help. Thanks for your help!!

Robert,

Cornell should welcome you with open arms -- 15% of their class had 1 year or less of work experience. (I realize you have 1.5 years of full-time experience, but since you are a college-age applicant I am using the "1-year of W/E" stat as a way of gauging schools' openness to young applicants like yourself.) HBS is also on record as quite open to college-age applicants.

At Tuck and CBS only 1% or less of their classes has 1 year or less of work experience so your odds may be tougher there. I don't have Yale's numbers in this stat, but their acceptance rate is considerably higher than CBS, HBS, and Tuck so you should probably give them a shot too. In my opinion, you have the kind of profile that B-schools design their college-applicant admissions policies in order to admit. So I would not be surprised if several of these schools came through for you.

Good luck,
