b. About half of those who leave medical school report feeling depressed after they make decision to leave.

D for me

Recent surveys show that many people who have left medical school before graduating suffer from depression, clearly, depression is likely to cause withdrawal from medical school.-> is the conclusion, we need to look for an option that talks about depression leading to withdrawal from school.

Which of the following if true, would most strengthen the conclusion above?

a. Many medical schools provide psychological counseling for their students.-> eliminate it, does not give any info on dropouts.

b. About half of those who leave medical school report feeling depressed after they make decision to leave.-> depression after they leave nothing to do with the dropout

c. Depression is very common among management consultants who have a similarly difficult work schedule to those of many young doctors.-> does not talk about dropouts

d. medical students who have sought depression counseling due to family problems leave at a higher rate than the national average.-> they have sought depression counseling and then leave thus strengthens the conclusion

e. career change has been shown to be a strong contributing factor in the onset of depression.->

We have to establish the fact that the medical students are depressed before they drop out before graduating.

If we follow POE:

A and B weaken the conclusion
E has no connection to the argument under discussion.
Now left are C and D

D may cover very small section of the students who suffer with the depression caused by family poblems. This does not talk about the students in general so it is not sufficient to strengthen the conclusion.

C supports the fact that the students are already depressed before they leave the college.
Hence C is the winner.

C only if "young doctores" refer to medical students. otherwise none seems correct...

d. medical students who have sought depression counseling due to family problems leave at a higher rate than the national average. [ the only one that works ]

e. career change has been shown to be a strong contributing factor in the onset of depression. [this actually weakens because why would med school students want a career change by leaving then ?]

I also chose D by POE, but I dont like how D adds 'depression due to family problems' - because now, it seems as though theyre shifting the reason to 'family problems' with 'depression' being more a consequence of that/secondary reason to withdrawal from school

I had a tough time defending D against C.
Do u guys rate this as one of those difficult ones (which appear towards the end of exam if u r heading for a 750?) :roll:
