(A) rather than developing independently from [Incorrect, Past tense is required]
(B) rather than a type that developed independently from [Correct]
(C) rather than a type whose development was independent of [Incorrect, wordy, wrong use of 'independent of']
(D) instead of developing independently from [Incorrect, same as A]
(E) instead of a development that was independent of [Incorrect, what development??]

Shouldn't we use instead of, not rather than... since we are not showing any contrast/??????????

In GMAT land, "rather than" is always favored over " instead of" :)

the choices with "instead of" are not good in this question. And usually "rather than" is preferred.
