A really good question!
This is an assumption type of question. The author makes a leap of faith between the premise and the conclusion. Our mission is to identify this idea. Note that assumption must present a new information, and must support the conclusion.

E received complains about SC's range of C.
90% who complained -> acc. SC racism

But -> SC 20% of mk of C
Thus, at least 20% cons. do not find the ADs controversial.

the author jumps from 20% of market share of cheese to making a conclusion that consumers of SC's cheese do not find ads controversial. This will be the case only when the consumers are aware of the ads. Moreover, the conclusion states 20% of consumers. 20% of consumers of cheese or 20% of consumers of SC's cheese?

Which of the following is an assumption of the argument?

A. Dislike of an advertisement has no impact on the likelihood that a consumer will purchase the product.
this has no impact on the conclusion of the argument. Even if it has no impact on the decision of purchase, it does not present any evidence that 20% of consumers do not find the ads controversial. Incorrect.

B. Sucrocorp’s consumers are aware of its advertisements.
This is an assumption that we identified during the pre-thinking. If SC's are aware, it can be the case that the consumers do not consider the ads controversial. Moreover, if you negate this statement, you clearly see that the conclusion is shattered, and no longer stands true.

C. The eighty per cent of consumers who do not buy Sucrocorp cheese consider the advertisement objectionable.
Even if they consider objectionable, the rest 20% can still not consider as controversial. Since it has no impact on the conclusion, this choice is incorrect.

D. Most consumers in the dairy market prefer certain types of cheese to others.
This is out of scope. The preference of the consumers is not discussed in the argument.

E. Most of the complaints against the advertisement were by people who have themselves been the victims of racist attacks.
Again, out of scope. Even if the complains were from people who were victims of racist attacks, it does not refute the author's conclusion that ~20% of the consumers do not consider the ads racist.

B is the answer.

Option D,E are out of scope, option A weakens the argument, option C can't be an assumption for this argument. Hence option B is correct and can become a missing link between premise and conclusion.

Re: Jamboree and GMAT Club Contest: Recently, editors of leading dailies [#permalink]
IMO C is correct
QUESTION #4:

Recently, editors of leading dailies have received several letters of complaint about an advertisement for Sucrocorp’s new range of cheeses. Ninety per cent of those who have complained about the advertisement have accused it of carrying racist undertones. However, Sucrocorp owns over twenty per cent of the market share for cheeses. Therefore, at least twenty per cent of consumers do not find the advertisement controversial.

Which of the following is an assumption of the argument?

A. Dislike of an advertisement has no impact on the likelihood that a consumer will purchase the product.
B. Sucrocorp’s consumers are aware of its advertisements.
C. The eighty per cent of consumers who do not buy Sucrocorp cheese consider the advertisement objectionable.
D. Most consumers in the dairy market prefer certain types of cheese to others.
E. Most of the complaints against the advertisement were by people who have themselves been the victims of racist attacks.

As the prephrase of the stimulus suggests that author assumes that 20% who buy cheese do not find cheese advertisement objectionable

C matches with our pre-thinking also if we apply negation test then the arguments is impacted if option c is negated

Ninety per cent of those who have complained about the advertisement have accused it of carrying racist undertones. However, Sucrocorp owns over twenty per cent of the market share for cheeses. Red- Conclusion
The conclusion suggests that the ones who purchase Sucrocorp’s cheeses consider that its advertisement do not contain any element of racism.
A. Dislike of an advertisement has no impact on the likelihood that a consumer will purchase the product.
- Actually, our conclusion suggests that cheese is purchased by ones who consider that the advertisement does not carry racist tones, so in the argument it is assumed that there is a link between the ad and consumption, so this answer is wrong. Additionally, if we negate this one, then we will have that the advertisement has an impact on consumer purchasing the cheese, so the ones that continue purchasing are not negatively affected.
B. Sucrocorp’s consumers are aware of its advertisements.
- Let’s negate this one. We will have that “Sucrocorp’s consumers not aware of its advertisements”. If consumers are not aware, this means that the current our conclusion stating that the clients do not find the ad with racist elements is wrong. This is the correct answer choice!
C. The eighty per cent of consumers who do not buy Sucrocorp cheese consider the advertisement objectionable.
- This answer choice is out of scope. It is not relevant for the conclusion the fact whether advertisement is objectionable or not.
D. Most consumers in the dairy market prefer certain types of cheese to others.
- Another OFs answer. The preference of consumers from dairy market is irrelevant.
E. Most of the complaints against the advertisement were by people who have themselves been the victims of racist attacks.
- Another OFS answer choice. Whether complaint is being written by a person who was a victim of racist attacks is not important.

I suppose answer is B.
Those who read the dailies complained to the editors, but it is not mentioned that those who complained were customers of the company. As the product has 20% market share,it is concluded that 20% of people do not find the advertisement objectionable. The connection be only established in case Either the consumers read the advertisement or the people who complained are customers of the product. Choice B is the assumption.

I think it should be B.

Premises:
1) Leading dailies have received several complaint about an advertisement for Sucrocorp's cheese.
2) 90% of the complaints have accused it of carrying racist undertones
3) Sucrocorp's market share > 20%

Conclusion:
At least twenty per cent of consumers do not find the advertisement controversial.

How to arrive at conclusion:
If out of 100, more than 20 people still purchase Suncrocorp's cheese => They dont have any problem with the ADs.

Pre-thinking Assumptions:
1)For the above link to be true, we should know for sure that those 20 people have actually seen the AD.
The conclusion breaks if we negate this.
2)The advertisements do impact the sale of a product

POE:
A. Dislike of an advertisement has no impact on the likelihood that a consumer will purchase the product.
Opposite of this could have been a contender. (pre-thought assumption 2 above)

B. Sucrocorp’s consumers are aware of its advertisements.
Bingo! If they are not aware of the ADs, the conclusion breaks.

C. The eighty per cent of consumers who do not buy Sucrocorp cheese consider the advertisement objectionable.
Just because the argument talks about %, please dont trick me with choices involving % :)
issue 1: The argument says that the market share is at least 20, it can even be 100%. There wont be any people who do not buy this cheese.
Issue 2: The people who do not buy this cheese might not be buying it even before the ADs were published. (Causal error)

D. Most consumers in the dairy market prefer certain types of cheese to others.
This is irrelevant. We are not concerned about the 'preference' of customers.

E. Most of the complaints against the advertisement were by people who have themselves been the victims of racist attacks.
Irrelevant again.

Hence B.

Which of the following is an assumption of the argument?
The assumption is that thethe people who buy the products are 1. aware of the campaign, 2. are not racists themselves (consumers could abet the racist campaign), 3. The consumers will alter their purchasing behaviour based on the advertisement campaign of the cheese-maker. 4. Note the *atleast twenty percent* part. This means that there could be other cheese customers who do not buy Sucrocorp's cheese and who don't find the advertisement objectionable.

A. Dislike of an advertisement has no impact on the likelihood that a consumer will purchase the product. On the contrary the argument says that the dislike of an advertisement will have an effect on the likelihood of a consumer purchasing a product.
B. Sucrocorp’s consumers are aware of its advertisements.Correct. Falls in line with Point 1.
C. The eighty per cent of consumers who do not buy Sucrocorp cheese consider the advertisement objectionable.Notice the word *atleast* in the conclusion. Also, further, the argument doesnt mean that. It could well be possible that the balance 80% choose to buy other products simply because they like other cheeses and not Sucrocorp's cheese.
D. Most consumers in the dairy market prefer certain types of cheese to others. Irrelevant
E. Most of the complaints against the advertisement were by people who have themselves been the victims of racist attacks. Irrelevant

Conclusion of the argument is "at least twenty per cent of consumers do not find the advertisement controversial." There could be more than 20% who do not find ad controversial.

A. Dislike of an advertisement has no impact on the likelihood that a consumer will purchase the product. : We are not concerned about purchase rather the percentage who do not find the ad controversial

B. Suncorp’s consumers are aware of its advertisements. Correct

C. The eighty per cent of consumers who do not buy Suncorp cheese consider the advertisement objectionable. Suncorp owns over twenty per cent of the market share for cheeses It has no bearing on conclusion.

D. Most consumers in the dairy market prefer certain types of cheese to others. Even this option is out of scope.

E. Most of the complaints against the advertisement were by people who have themselves been the victims of racist attacks. Out of scope.

The only choice left is B and it supports the conclusion so IMO B is the correct solution.

Editors -> Received several letters of complaint -> adv for Sun's new range of cheese
90% (Complaints) --> accused that ads carry racist undertones.
Sun -> 20% of mkt share for cheese.
So 20% of consumers -> did not find the adv controversial

Assumption: Controversial ads do not change the market share percentage of SunCorp's cheese.

Negating A breaks the conclusion.

Re: Jamboree and GMAT Club Contest: Recently, editors of leading dailies [#permalink]
First stimulus: several letters of complaint about an advertisement are received.
Second stimulus: Ninety per cent of those who complained accused it of carrying racist undertones.
Third stimulus: Sucrocorp owns over twenty per cent of the market share for cheeses.
Conclusion: at least twenty per cent of consumers do not find the advertisement controversial.

Evidently, we see a big gap between what the stimuli provide and what conclusion has been made from those stimuli. The new term will be the key to identify the answer. Because it is very clear that Answer C mentions such term "percent of consumers", it is very likely that this is the answer. However, we can understand it by putting in numbers:

- There are two type of people: those who use the product and those who do not. Those who use take the percentage of over 20% (choose 20 as minimum). Those who do not use take the number of 100-20 = 80.
- Within those who use and who do not use, we have two types of people: complain about the advertisement and do not complain about the advertisement. Then we have:
a) Those who use: 20
- Total complaints: x
- Complain about the advertisement: a
- Complain but NOT about the advertisement: x-a
=> Those who do not complain about the advertisement (= those who do not complain + complain but not about the advertisement) = (20 - x) + (x - a) = 20 - a (we assume that one person makes only one complain)
b) Those who not use: 80
- Total complaints: y
- Complain about the advertisement: b
- Complain but NOT about the advertisement: y-b
=> Those who do not complain about the advertisement (= those who do not complain + complain but not about the advertisement) = (80 - y) + (y - b) = 80 - b

The second stimulus says that "Ninety per cent of those who complained accused it of carrying racist undertones". Thus we have: a + b = 0.9(x+y)

Conclusion says: "at least twenty per cent of consumers do not find the advertisement controversial".
This means that: 20 - a + 80 - b >= 0.2.20 = 4 (Note: we multiple by 20, not 100 because we mention the customers, it means that these are the people who USE the product). Combined with the stimulus, we want to find out: (a + b) =< 96???

Answer C states clearly: "The eighty per cent of consumers who do not buy Sucrocorp cheese consider the advertisement objectionable." This means we have 80%*80 = 64 = b. So the conclusion asks: does "a =< 96 - 64 = 32" ?
Clearly, because a =<x =< 20 (because we assume that one complaint is equivalent to one person), the maximum of "a" is 20. Thus, conclusion always holds.

Thus, Answer C is the best choice.

Note: even when from the conclusion: "at least twenty per cent of consumers do not find the advertisement controversial", you use 20% of 100, then a + b will be smaller than a number which is much smaller than 96. More specifically: 100 - (a + b) >= 20 => a + b =< 80. With b = 64, a =< 16 (ALWAYS).

Out of B & C, I think correct answer is B. If we negate B, the conclusion fails. But if we negate C, the conclusion still stands as it talks about atleast 20 percent.

D. Most consumers in the dairy market prefer certain types of cheese to others.
E. Most of the complaints against the advertisement were by people who have themselves been the victims of racist attacks.

Ans:B
According to question After giving details of the complaints and a fact that in those complaints 90% have accused the advertisement for rascist undertones, The premise changed the topic showing that Sucrocorp own over 20 percent of market share and THIS LEADS to CONCLUSION At least 20% of consumers do not find advertisement controversial.
Here we have to find assumption--that is missing link between blue and pink
While reading I came up we assumption that advertisement was so popular that every one knew about it that is why the conclusion is Therefore, at least twenty per cent of consumers do not find the advertisement controversial.
Going with that lets scan the answer choices.
A. Dislike of an advertisement has no impact on the likelihood that a consumer will purchase the product.--- This is a weaken point because if dislike has no impact then we cannot arrive at conclusion as it is based on like and dislike only
B. Sucrocorp’s consumers are aware of its advertisements. -----This is more on lines on my assumption that every customer knows about advertisement and then we can arrive at conclusion. Or we can have negation test consumers were not aware of its advertisements Then our conclusion falls apart as if consumers are not knowing about advertisements then we can not conclude they donot find it controversial.
C. The eighty per cent of consumers who do not buy Sucrocorp cheese consider the advertisement objectionable.-- this is tough one to eliminate-- putting it through negation test -- The eighty per cent of consumers who do not buy Sucrocorp cheese donot consider the advertisement objectionable. This does not affects conclusion cos then also we have 20% consumers, who donot find it offensive.
D. Most consumers in the dairy market prefer certain types of cheese to others.---Irrelevant
E. Most of the complaints against the advertisement were by people who have themselves been the victims of racist attacks.--- Irrelevant
