Recommeders who you do not report to... [#permalink]
20 Nov 2006, 08:23
So I have a few potential recommenders who are big wigs. What is the deal with having people like this recommend? I would expect we want to do alot of direct supervisor recs, but if they have looser experience but feel passionately about us is it good to use someone who is really high up and in a way somewhat famous, ie been in Wall St Journal and Barrons many times?

Mark - I went with 2 who I do not directly report to. But both have MBAs. My direct supervisor is not in a position where she would be able to discuss my potential as an MBA candidate because she lacks the education and personally I dont feel I will get what I need out of her.
Schools talk a big game about getting one from your direct - but if you have one from the CEO, CFO, or Chairman of the Board, I really dont see how schools view that as a minus. It shows you are connected and thats what they want.
On the flip side, having the CEO write nice things about you if you dont report to them might not do much to help your cause because they might see it as fluff. Personally, I would get the best recommendation you can - if its not from your direct then dont worry about it.

Yeah... This particular guy is a friend of my dad's so he knows some of my struggles growing up (overcoming a difficult heart condition for example) but he also is very high up in my company and has come to me in the past for "how does it work at the broker level." So in a sense we have worked together. Of course I will give him some update and leadership stories to help him write better since I do not report to him. He is a Yale alum so he would be great for a Yale rec, but I think I will have him write for other top schools as well. He is a person who actually cares about me... so it might be a great rec.

I would also use the optional essay to explain why 1 rec isn't from an immediate supervisor.

Well... if one is from an immediate supervisor and the other is not, why would you need to explain. As long as one of them is an immediate supervisor I think you'd be set.
