Recommendation From Current Supervisor

Hi Linda,

I'm surprised how much is written about the need to obtain a recommendation from your current supervisor. I work for a Big 5 consulting firm, where an MBA is generally frowned upon. I have worked with my current supervisor for only a few months, so I have selected 2 former supervisors that I have worked for over many years. If the school does not specifically ask about a recommendation from a current supervisor (e.g. Berkeley), do you feel I need to write anything about this?

Since you have only worked for your current supervisor for a few months, you could possibly get away without writing why you did not ask him or her, but I think it is wiser to dot your i's and cross your t's. So include a short paragraph saying that you chose to ask your former supervisors because you have only worked for this supervisor for a few short months and because you didn't want your current supervisor to know you planned to leave.

Hi,

My greatest concern would be to find writers who could provide the most persuasive descriptions of your abilities. This would almost certainly be the supervisors who know you best. I would not spend too much time explaining why you picked these writers to schools who do not specify who should provide the letters of rec. and do not ask for such a justification.

im in the same situation as well... my direct supervisor left my company two months ago to start his own business and i was reassigned to a supervisor that knows me but is not entirely familiar with my work. im not comfortable asking him for a recommendation at all. i will ask my former supervisor of over 3 years instead. linda, seeing as i will cross my t's and dot my i's in the optional essay, not having a recommendation from a current superivisor will not reflect poorly, will it? my other two rec's should be glowing.

As long as you provide a brief explanation (dotting the i's and crossing the t's), you should be fine and are doing exactly what I would recommend.
