Recommendation Refusal [#permalink] New post 22 Nov 2010, 15:25
Hi All,

Just wondering if any of you have had the unpleasant experience of having your direct supervisor refuse to write a recommendation? I did a few searches of the forums but didn't come up with any earlier posts (apologies if there are some).

I ask because my supervisor is giving me signs that they may not be willing to write recommendations for schools that will take me out of the area and therefore require me to leave my current position. This is causing me a bit of anxiety as I would really like to avoid submitting apps without a direct supervisor.

On a related note, has anyone ever heard of someone being fired after letting their direct supervisor know they were wanting to leave for an MBA? (I don't think the latter will happen, but I've been curious about this one for a while)

If you have any doubts about the enthusiasm of a recommender, don't use that person. Every school says that they understand that you may not be able to use a direct supervisor for this exact reason, so you'd just have to explain the situation in the optional essay.
