Hi Linda,
Thank you for all your good work here.
I have a bit of a problem. I cannot ask my current supervisor for a recommendation letter. If I ask her, she will almost surely give me a great recommendation, BTW. However, I can ask a person who was e director of our group until last year, when he left for another firm. When he was the director of my group, he reviewed my performance and decided my promotions, bonuses etc for 3 years. He is quite familiar with my work.
Is it going to be an impediment in my application?
It is not an impediment. It is a quite common situation. Just provide a simple explanation why you can't ask your current supervisor. Also the rec from your previous supervisor should outline when he worked with you and for how long. He seems quite qualified to give you a rec.
