Dr. Sayre’s lecture recounted several little-known episodes in the relations between nations that illustrates what is wrong with alliances and treaties that do not have popular support.
(A) relations between nations that illustrates
(B) relation of one nation with another that illustrates
(C) relations between nations that illustrate
(D) relation of one nation with another and illustrate
(E) relations of nations that illustrates

I'll go with B.
What is illustrating. It seems like the "lecture" is doing the "illustrating", so A, B or E.

B it should be.
For more than two nations ,we require one another. A and C are out.
In D, instead of ' and ' , ' that ' is required.
In E, ' relations ' is wrong. Should be ' relation '.

Nope, this is wrong. It is the relation that illustrates. Because lecture recounted , the second verb should be in the past as well.
However, B is the correct choice

Impossible. Let's simplify the sentence. The lecture recounted episodes that illustrate what is wrong with alliances.
'That' refers to 'episodes', therefore C must be correct.

C cannot be right.. because between cannot have more than 2... So it has to be relation among nations.. then C would have been ok..
I am not sure why is E wrong?

I agree that between is used when talking about two things. Can you have a relation among many nations. No. Relations are always one to one i.e between two things. So I believe, between is correct here.
I still believe that this should be C. Its the episodes that are illustrating.

I agree with PS, relations are between 2 nations.
Example : three nations A B C:
relation AB, BC, AC : There are 3 relations between A and B, B and C, C and A. Thus C.
I've never seen the idiom "relation of a with b" but "relation between a and B".

I think the problem lies with the quality of this SC.
"illustrate" should logically be the verb of "episodes", then you can't use its singular form. obviously B is incorrect.
