Hey kunzi,
Thanks for appreciating my post man.

I always wanted to be in consulting when I wanted to get an MBA. I like to suggest steps since I have good observation skills, love technology, like to learn new things all the time and a bit of futuristic (want to know how the future looks). So while I was struggling with this half epiphany, I was on a documentary watching spree last year and stumbled on to Zeitgeist documentary. In the end they show how we can save the failing humanity. They show renewable energy as part of a sustainable living. Then I was hooked buddy. Since then I have been watching, learning about CT. Since I have a belief that 'Only technology can liberate us' this is my calling card, CleanTech :)

Its going to be a long and bumpy road ahead. But, no man can walk out on his own story

Well dude... cool story and a cooler name... however imho... u'll need some real life examples like participation in some energy or environment related competition or case study or course or some other extra curricular to demonstrate your interest. But take this with a grain of salt. That's how I see it.

But yes a definitely justifiable motivation to pursue your heart.

All the best for your MBA journey man.. we can discuss the applications that we'd be filling out including essay reviews. Mutual help is always a win win. Hope you agree.

Hey,
Good that you liked the new name. I was thinking of 'McCleantek'. What do you say?

Yes, definitely agree on helping. Sure we will help each other out on our MBA applications.
About activities related to this field, I got TERI (The Energy and Resource institute, Bangalore, India) internship for 2 months full time. But no pay and no surety that I would get a job there. I could not leave a full time pay for that internship. Felt like ripping my heart out on that day. They are into renewables, sustainable etc. It was perfect. I asked for weekend work without pay, they did not have any. That was a gut wrenching decision bro :| But I left them with a nice 'see you sometime again' call though :)

If you are set on cleantech, the best places are McCombs and Haas. I work for a cleantech firm and that's where most of our post-MBA's are from (with a few more from H/S/W). Both are great but given the choice I'd probably go with Haas if cleantech is the goal.

However, when a cleantech firm is looking to hire someone these days, there a half dozen qualified candidates with prior cleantech experience given all the consolidation in the industry lately. You will be a lot more successful going for a more traditional energy sector role first, then transitioning to cleantech. Worked for me.

@AndersHolmvik:
Yes but all those schools require excellent profiles. I can get good GMAT but with a none IIT and not so great work exp. Those schools become unrealistic. I will apply for McCombs though. I think its in my reach. But those top ones really scare me. You see, this year is 'Do or Die' year. So I need to make sure I get in a good reach college with cleantech or RE in it.
I was also thinking, if I dont get into Cleantech consulting right away. Then I should have a backup plan like consulting. Keep doing that until the switch happens :)

Also, any website that is great for case studies on cleantech?

Why is it that nobody can help us out regarding questions on how to get into Cleantech consulting field?
Even the guys who are into this field just dont respond to your questions. Even the guys who are in Bschool and had previous exp in cleantech.
So I guess we are on our own. Thats ok, we can figure it out. Here are some useful links,

Hi all,
Still here and short listing schools. To be honest its not going good. I have to still take my GMAT and schools on cleantech or RE are growing thin.
I will have to come up with a backup plan if I dont get into cleantech or RE consulting. Also, people working in this field are not opening up as much as I thought.
Only one good thing going on is that I am taking those online classes in EduX. Its called Energy 101 from UT McCombs. Hope that will help me getting to know this field more clearly.
Bye for now.

I work in cleantech venture capital right now, feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Its an interesting, but insanely turbulent field. Gigaom just came out with an article today that cleantech VC this past quarter was at its lowest level in 7 years. Proceed with caution.

Here is my first discussion:
I just wanted to know the schools that are good in Cleantech. I have seen Mccombs has a cleantech major. But some say its not the school for renewable.
Here are some of the schools I am considering: Rice, McCombs, Boston Mgmt, Georgetown, Colorado(low in ranking but state is high in RE).
To be honest almost all schools I have talked to are not that into RE or dont have any plans to have RE as majors. Please help me to look around for such schools.
I mainly want to be in Green energy consulting or anything that is with cleantech.

Also, what exactly do you mean by cleantech consulting? Other than a few big names, they are mostly small companies that can't afford fancy consultants.

Hi and thank you for helping me out here.
I hope we could do this out in the open so that everybody can benefit from this.
You see I am not clear on what cleantech consulting is. Thats why I am trying to find out more about it.
I just want to be in a field where I would help companies and governments become more greener.
Let me give you scenarios of kind of jobs I want to be and then later you can tell me what is realistic and what is not :)

Scenario 1: XYZ company wants to save on electricity bills and be more greener. So they will call the company I work and ask our team to give them a solution on how they achieve this. Then we all sit around the table and brainstorm into the nights to give them a solution.

Scenario 2: I work for an solar energy company and who setup solar fields to generate the energy. I am part of their company team who make this happen. I mean we suggest which is the best place and how big the solar field should be etc etc

I am hoping the BCG or other consulting companies have this kind of work (consulting companies). I see them coming up with these kind of reports every now and then.

Now, here are some of the other questions I have.
I am using internet to get a feel of this field: reading reports, attending webinars, watching youtube videos and websites.
But I am missing out on how do I understand in detail about this field. Let me share one of my questions: How cleantech (energy) consulting people get started on installation of a solar panel grid for a company or some project?
How do I become employable to a cleantech consulting company? That is my ultimate question. What all details I should know to be in this field?
For now lets assume I want to be in Solar energy field.

Yeah, I heard that too. I am hoping I can have a back up concentration to fall back on. Like technology consulting or general management. I heard GM helps in consulting too.
