Repeat Undergraduate course for a better GPA? [#permalink] New post 07 Apr 2012, 10:50
Hello all,

Currently, I have a 3.842 GPA and have considered retaking a couple of classes. If I retake these classes (core classes), then my GPA would jump to a 3.916 and I would have a better chance of obtaining Summa Cum Laude, which is a 3.95 - 4.0 at this university. I have 1 year of school left (graduating next spring) and without retaking the classes, the highest GPA I can get is a 3.897. Taking the extra courses wouldn't be difficult...

Is it worth retaking the classes? How do Business School admissions committees view repeated courses?

Thanks! :-D

What did you get in the courses the first time around? If you got a B- then it probably isn't worth it to retake, the Adcoms might wonder why you wasted your time retaking a course that you did pretty well in. However, if its more like a D that you're replacing then it's probably worth it.

I received a solid B in both classes. The reason for retaking them is that one of them was a really easy class, I just made a couple of silly mistakes that cost me an A. The other class wouldn't be difficult but would require me to take 21 credits each semester instead of 18.

Is GPA as important as I think it is? Should I focus more on finding an internship?

Thanks for the replies!

I think that an internship is going to be a lot more important in the long run, especially since your GPA is already excellent.

A 3.897 will be the least of your worries when applying to b-school. Your time will be better spent on an internship or taking new classes that are of interest to you.

The thing when comes to retaking courses is to realize to what extent a better grade (say, A) will benefit you more. Imagine paying a tennis game against Novak Djokovic. He will beat you, but what is he going to prove ? Same goes with your courses. You are going to retake two fairly easy courses but what are you going to prove with this ? You can spend these credit hours much better by taking advanced courses in your major(s). Besides, your GPA is already excellent.

yep, and calculating a GPA out 3 decimal places may be a little obsessive :-D

Its a great GPA either way. Focus on growing in other ways.

Agree with the previous posters... is there another aspect of your application that needs improvement?
