Two walls face each other at a certain distance x. A ladder 12m long lies at the bottom of the first wall and rests at the second wall. Another ladder 8m long lies at the bottom of the second wall and rests at the first wall. The two ladders intersect at a point 5m above the ground level (ground is flat between the two walls).

What is the distance x between the two walls?

I am unabale to crack it. Dont you think that at what point from one wall does the ladder meet should be given? Any clues... anyone.

As the gap approaches 8 m, the ladders would approach meeting on the ground.

As the gap approaches 0 m long, they ladders approach meeting 8m up

If we assume that the progression of the difference is continuous and arithmetic (I do not know if this is a valid assumption!), we can figure it out this way.

I'm still working on it.

My research shows that this problem can be solved with Newton's method.

My research also shows that this problem can be solved in about an hour using Heron's law.

My intuition tells me that this problem isn't relevant to the GMAT.

:-D :lol: and my research shows that this problem is relevent for those taking GMAT on Mars. What a :puke problem is this. Damn it spoiled the weekend.
