Agree on A ...good tip, Matt :)

Is the antecedant of 'It' clear in A? Why not B?

yes, "it" clearly points to "body heat" , the only singular noun here :)

B doesn't keep the parallelism.

How about the Sun?

I soon predicted that you would put forward this question
uhm, IMO, as long as the ambiguity generated by a pronoun is under the threshold ( that is to say, there is almost no one would question its antecedent) , the pronoun is acceptable ....in this case, "generating the Sun" sounds extremely unreasonable :!:

Reptiles, by drawing their body heat directly from the Sun rather
than burning calories to generate it, can survive on ten percent
of the nourishment that a mammal of similar size would normally
require

1) rather than burning calories to generate it
2) rather than the generation of body heat by burning calories
3) and not from generating it by burning calories
4) instead of by burning calories for generating it
5) instead of body heat generated by burning calories

Hi,
The OA is A. Source is GMAT software question pack 1.

Can we have an expert explanation? I realize that the question is testing parallelism, but am having hard time understanding what parts of speech are parallel.

Thank You,

Could someone explain the usage of rather than and instead of. I chose E.

I see a redundancy error in E. But if that error is eliminated can i choose E?

Hi rajathpanta
I think we have a parrallelism issue in all the answer choices except for A and D : By drawing // rather than burning
Hence, E is wrong even if the redundancy is eliminated and IMO the use of instead of by is awkward.
Hope it helps

Yes, GMAT prep question pack. I feel this question is pretty old and GMAC has included all these old questions in the pack.

GMAT never test the difference between "rather" and " instead of" . if you see a question testing this point, pls email me.

the problem with D is

"for generating"

"for doing" is not idiomatic way to show the purpose of a verb. "for doing" can modify a noun a a verb but if it modify a verb it show not the purpose of the other meaning relation with the verb, such as reason of main verb.

for example

I get mba for passing gmat test

sorry for typein error, my laptop has touchpad not working.

for doing can be used to modify a noun or a verb. if it modifies a verb , it dose not show the purpose of the verb but the other meaning relation with that verb

for example

I get gmat for passing gmat test.

"rather than" is the correct term to compare the two, which leaves A and B. Option has "the generation of ..." which is not parallel with "drawing their..."

Is it possible to argue that the "it" in correct answer choice A refers to "the sun" and is thus vague?

D) instead of by burning calories for generating it
E) instead of body heat generated by burning calories

A) Correct.
B) "Drawing their body heat" is not parallel to "generation of body heat".
C) "Not from generating it by burning calories" is grammatically incorrect and does not make any sense.
D) Changes meaning -- original sentence does not discard "burning calories" totally ("rather than" only shows preference); but this sentence discards "burning calories" totally. "For generating" is unidiomatic -- correct usage is "to generate".
E) Changes meaning as in D. Parallelism issue as in B.

In real GMAT, "rather than" is always better than "instead of".
IMO, A is correct.

A) rather than burning calories to generate it
Correct. Parallelism. "drawing" // "burning"

B) rather than the generation of body heat by burning calories
Wrong. Not parallelism: "drawing" vs "the generation"

C) and not from generating it by burning calories
Wrong. The use of "and" is incorrect. It changes meaning.

D) instead of by burning calories for generating it
Wrong. "instead of by.." is unidiomatic.

E) instead of body heat generated by burning calories
Wrong. Not parallelism. "drawing" vs "body heat"

In choice A what is the antecedent of "it". How do I know it doesn't refer to the sun?

"by drawing their body heat directly from the Sun rather than burning calories to generate it" is the modifier, modifying reptiles and describes an action they do for survival.

We clan strait away strike D and E because they use "instead of" Of is the preposition and therefore needs noun just after it. X instead of Y. Y should be a noun,
"body heat generated by burning calories" and "by burning calories for generating it " are again wrong after instead of

since it is a comparison we don't need "and" which is used for joining the sentences rather than comparing it.
between A and B I guess A clearly wins on parallelism
"by drawing their body heat" "rather than burning calories"

hope it helps :)
