Will go with E
IMO "rathar than" is used when choice is there. " I will prefer to take GMAT in 2006 rathar than 2005"
"instead of" is used when replaced. " I preferred to take GMAT in 2005 instead of 2004"
Please correct me if I am wrong. 
Between D and E, I prefer D because of "body heat directly from the Sun" and "body heat generated by burning calories". This shows "product (body heat) from source (Sun or burning calories)" in both cases.

It's between 'A' & 'D'
I would click on 'D'.
From the senetence meaning, I think we need 'instead of' & 'D' appears to maintain the llism & continuation of the sentence.

ETS SC RULE #1: VIRTUALLY ALWAYS CHOOSE RATHER THAN OVER INSTEAD OF UNLESS THE FORMER IS A GRAMMATICAL NIGHTMARE. This pattern has about a 99% accuracy rate.

uhm, IMO, as long as the ambiguity generated by a pronoun is under the threshold ( that is to say, there is almost no one would question its antecedent) , the pronoun is acceptable ....in this case, "generating the Sun" sounds extremely unreasonable

Hi,
The OA is A. Source is GMAT software question pack 1.
Can we have an expert explanation? I realize that the question is testing parallelism, but am having hard time understanding what parts of speech are parallel.
