Requesting Advice on the effect of mba major on career [#permalink] New post 15 Oct 2010, 06:22
I dont know this exactly but i was hoping some experts might answer.
I have 2 questions

1.If i am looking to get into a business, people & client management along with well paying role rather than a boxed out for the rest of your life (back office role), is it imperative that i need to be in a sales or consulting role?

1.Post Mba, i am thinking that i could perform well in terms of career progression as a Manager in the Analysis & Data Management section of a bank but i am not sure if it makes me happy if i am boxed out again with geeky stuff. What to do?

:) kidding, I could invent a new spaceship and get over with nitpicky stuff like this.

2.Will a student who picked Entrepreneurship as the primary major, then did GM,Finance alongside be at a disadvantage when he is compared to another student who picked GM or Finance as MBA major, when it comes to recruting say for a business management(GM) role in say a Bank(JPM) or Corporate Office(Accenture)?

The specializations are a little bit of a joke in many cases - you display your competency beyond that. I forget, but I think I have specializations in Financial Instruments & Markets (which I truly did specialize in) and then could pick from Corporate Finance (kind of an accident, but arguably true) and Law & Business (frankly ridiculous).

If you have a bit of diversity across them it helps to tailor your resume, but mostly people want to see what you know, as opposed to what a specialization suggests you know. You can achieve specializations very easily or with taking really difficult classes, and that matters.

Financial Instruments and Markets, sounds like IB mixed with jason :).

Yes your right diversity helps tailor the resume, but dont you think when your applying for jobs your MBA reads
Did X,Y and Z, wow what does this guy really know well for me to pay bling, X, Y or Z.?
It might be harder to convince.

On the banking side, you would prefer to be in a business management role rather than a more primary function like a trading desk or a M&A team ?

I have a question do u mean to say a person having Enng, IT background will be allowed to join as a Business Dev Manager in a bank?( i mean wouldn`t the recruiter think this guy has no banking experience how the heck will he develop the business as a manager. OR i suppose u mean business development manager from a technology perspective, like a manager in IT section of a bank.)

Are the careers Sales & Trading or M&A really boring, laborious, scarce and hard to get it?
