B. would need to experiment significantly more than they do now
C. will need to experiment significantly more
D. need to experiment significantly more now than they do
E. would need to experiment significantly more as compared to now

C - incorrect comparison; MORE...(THAN is missing)
D - incorrect comparison; ENGINEERS NEED TO experiment significantly more NOW than THEY DO (WHAT..)
E - MORE...(THAN is missing); MORE...AS COMPARED TO (both comparsion indicators are not required)
A- We require CONDITIONAL tense

Researchers estimate that in order to use stem cells in future to treat organ damage, genetic engineers need to experiment significantly more than they do now about
the growth mechanisms and transformation structures of these cells.

A. need to experiment significantly more than they do now :(
the overall sentence meaning implies a conditional situation in the future and as such, it requires "would" to complete its logic

B. would need to experiment significantly more than they do now :)
This is the correct choice.

C. will need to experiment significantly more :(
will changes the context of the sentence. "In order to use stem cell in the future" we need this condition: "engineers need to experiment significantly more than they do now" the only way to express this relation
is to use "would need" and not "will need"

D. need to experiment significantly more now than they do :(
missing "would"

E. would need to experiment significantly more as compared to now :(
this sentence has "would" but illogically compares "more" to "now"

I dont understand why "would" is used. I mean the main clause is in simple present tense, and we are referring to an event in future, so, aren't we supposed to use "will"??

You are correct as per the concept. But in cases where uncertainty is involved 'would' is preferred. Moreover in option C- the comparison is not complete.

I think "will" and "would" both represent CONDITION .
The only difference lies in the tense .

Plus if we are talking in present tense then we use "will" and if we are talking about something the past then we use "would" to show condition .

Hi All,

Researchers estimate that in order to use stem cells in future to treat organ damage, genetic engineers need to experiment significantly more than they do now about the growth mechanisms and transformation structures of these cells.

Let’s understand the intended meaning first. Researchers have made some estimates. Now, these are only estimates or assumptions and not something certain. Per this estimate, genetic engineers would need to experiment significantly more than they do currently about the growth mechanisms and transformation structure of stem cells in order to use these cells in future to treat organ damage.

Error Analysis: Notice that this sentence talks about the estimate made by researchers. Estimates are assumptions. Hence, there is uncertainty involved. So whenever there is uncertainty about any future event, we use conditional “would”. This sentence lacks that conditional “would”. It rather uses simple present tense “need”, making this action a certainty. The sentence now suggests that the genetic engineers surely need to experiment more for the specific purpose. This is not the intended meaning.

POE:
A. need to experiment significantly more than they do now: Incorrect for the reason stated above.

B. would need to experiment significantly more than they do now: Correct. Conditional “would” presents uncertainty in this action.

C. will need to experiment significantly more: Incorrect.
1. Use of “will” is incorrect as it denotes a certain action.
2. This choice does not have the intended comparison.

D. need to experiment significantly more now than they do: Incorrect.
1. Repeats the verb tense error of choice A.
2. Change in placement of “now” suggests that the genetic engineers need to do experiment significantly now while the original sentence says that in future they need to do so.

E. would need to experiment significantly more as compared to now: Incorrect. This choice uses incorrect idiom. We need “than” after more for correct comparison.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.
Shraddha

Here. Estimate is in present tense, so got this doubt.
The book says that "The scientist BELIEVES that the machine WOULD BE wonderful" is WRONG. This sentence is similar to that we analyse above.
Any thoughts?

Rather than Process of Elimination, I am looking for the usage of would. How would is required to complete the meaning of sentence here?

1. How the word would affect the meaning of sentence?
2. Are there any rules for using would?
