I wish I could. I rely entirely on what sounds right to me. I often find myself reading the sentence out loud. I know I need to get rid of that before the exam..:)

OK. Here's my (ir)rationale...

Researchers have discovered a new species of sparrow that lives only in cypress groves, almost wholly dependent on the berries of a certain type of vine that grows on cypress trees and whose coloring is completely different from all other sparrows.

A) that lives only in cypress groves, almost wholly dependent on the berries of a certain type of vine that grows in cypress trees and whose coloring is completely different from all other sparrows.

Indicates incorrectly that the discovery was based on the berries.

C)living only in cypress groves, is almost wholly dependent on the berries of a certain type of vine that grows on cypress trees, and whose coloring is completely different from all other sparrows

D & E seemed awkward.

So B.

B was my answer. Pronoun issue w/whose.

"whose" should be referring to sparrrows. What "whose" references is unclear. "trees", "vine", "berries" also precede whose and can all be whose's antecedent.

Researchers have discovered a new species of sparrow that lives only in cypress groves, almost wholly dependent on the berries of a certain type of vine that grows on cypress trees and whose coloring is completely different from all other sparrows.
