You can actually reach the correct answer here without even distinguishing between the 'like' and the 'such as'

Options A, B, and D use the phrase 'drinking milk', which besides being non-parallel, is grammatically wrong.

Between C and E, E loses it for using 'its' -> what does 'its' refer to here? It can only be referring to the human body (as the previous 'its' does), but the human body can't be using its own protein derived from eggs, soy, and milk!

Therefore C is the best choice here.

1. examples should be introduce by such as not like.
2. AND is an important word on the GMAT. the element joined by and should play the same role in the sentence, elements can be nouns, verbs or phrases.

A. protein from other sources such as soy, eggs or drinking milk : elements are not parallel
B. protein from other sources like soy, eggs or drinking milk
C. protein from other sources such as soy, eggs or milk
D. protein which it has derived from other sources such as soy, eggs or drinking milk
E. its protein from other sources such as soy, eggs or milk

the original choice mistake is breaking the parallel structure in a list of items
It should be milk

such as is used to list an series of example

I like darks colors such as red , black and indigo

' like " I will give you the explanation a Kaplan instructor once gave me
SNOPPY , like dogs eats a lot
SNOPPY , like cats eats a lot

those are The 2 cases for like

D and E changes the meaning of the sentence, B is out because of the word "like",
between A and C, ones should safely have C as the correct answer because it is more formal and concise.

ANS C)

Derived from Whey is parallel to from other sources.

Option D use redundant meaning.

Derived from other sources

Obviously, drinking is used as a verb in A, however, if it were used as an adjective how would it matter?

KAPLAN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:



C.

The underlined portion contains a list of 3 sources of protein. These 3 sources must have parallel forms, but soy, eggs, and drinking milk do not. A parallel construction would be soy, eggs, or milk. So (A), (B), and (D) are out. (E) adds the ambiguous and unnecessary pronoun its. (C) is correct.
