Researching for MBA programs early [#permalink] New post 30 May 2011, 02:09
Halloo everyone. I have been lurking on this forum for the last three months and I finally decided to sign up. Here is a short brief about me.
- I was born in Kenya and moved to the United States in late 2001
- After three years of high School, I joined the US Army.
- I have been in the military for the last 6.5 years.
- I’m a sergeant and I have tremendous responsibilities on my current duty station (If I play with the right words, they can have some weight on my resume). My job requires frequent business related interaction between military, DOD civilians and Local nationals. I’m currently stationed in Germany.
- I’m trilingual (English, Swahili, Kikuyu)
- I’m still working on my Business Administration degree at University of Maryland University College. (Have 36 credits left). Should be done by July 12 or before.
- By GPA sit on 3.0
- I plan to separate from the military in Jan 13 and attend MBA program later that year.

My top schools are Tuck, Cornell, Temper and Fuqua .

Any advice?

Anything would be highly appreciated.

Thanks

You are really well positioned for those target schools. Business schools in general really love military candidates and your being from Kenya will also add a diversity component which should make you even more appealing as a candidate. I would definitely make the most out of your time left in the military, working towards any and all promotions or awards, etc. you can get, particularly in the area of leadership. Additionally, I would make sure I participated in some extra curricular activities where your troop may be involved in the community. Toys for Tots, food drives, neighborhood cleanup, DUI awarness campaigns, etc....whatever it is, the b-schools will be impressed if you had time to go to school, be in the military and also participate in your community. You can also do such activities through your school of course. Also, begin to talk to your superiors about your plans and try to find an officer or two who can write a good recommendation. Military recs will be better than academic recs. The key will be crafting your story in a compelling way that will appeal to the ad coms. if you need help doing this, don't hesitate to contact us.
