Response to thank you email [#permalink]

This is going to be obvious for most people, but has been bothering me for the past two months. I'm making this post just to help folks who may have this question in the coming application rounds : " Is not getting a response to my than you email after an interview, a bad sign ? "
The answer is definitely "NO".
A very selective top 5 school did not respond to my thank you email, and a not so selective top 20 school sent a very good response to my email. Guess what ? I got into the top 5 school and rejected by the less selective school.
My conclusion is that sending a response to a thank you email is merely a matter of personal policy. Some are going to respond no matter how badly your interview went and some will not respond no matter how well your interview went.

now you got me concerned. I've never had people reply back to my thank you letters before and it was mostly a mixed bag of results. After my visit to Johson I didn't get any replies to my letters and I got dinged. However this time my interviewer at Duke responded to my TY letter. So I'm hoping this time it's for the best

That said, I do hope that you get into Duke! all the best!

Receiving reply to thank you note has no correlation whatsoever with anything. Admissions and interviewers receive tons of thank you notes and responding or not is a matter of time/personal choice. I have received hand-written thank you notes in the mail from prospective students - I don't think they expect same in response.
Thank you notes topic comes up every year and every year people make big deal out of it. It's a very minor detail - thank you note will never make or break the deal.

I received no response to my thank you on one admit w/ fellowship. I received a fantastic and gracious response to a thank you letter on one admit w/ fellowship. I received a fantastic and gracious response to a thank you letter on a straight up rejection. I received no response to my thank you on a waitlist. So yeah, make of that what you will. (Hopefully you arrive at the "there is no correlation" conclusion, as I did )

Yes such things won't make or break. Eg. if you write in your email ' Please do asap, as the project is blah blah blah'. No matter how many times u write kindly please...urgent........ It does not matter......

I agree that there is no correlation, this is a personal decision by the interviewer and not necessarily the school policy. Also, assuming that all interviewees send thank you emails, responding to all of them is a lot of work!

Imagine if we all had to respond to every thank you note. then you would have thank you notes to respond to for the thank you notes, and then thankyounotes for the thankyounotes' thankyountes!!!! argghhhh
