Resume for MBA Fair [#permalink] New post 09 Jan 2012, 18:29
I'm going to my first official MBA thing tomorrow. (Applying next year)

I'm trying to figure out how to layout my resume. Now, I understand all of the basics, but I'm struggling with figuring out where to put experience that isnt exactly professional work related.

So, my headings are Professional Experience, Education, Additional Information. I want to add a section for other experience... For example, I helped launch a start-up this year. Also, I held a full time position as an E-Marketing Manager while still in college for 2 years, normally I would add it to work experience, but I want to avoid inflating my working years (since I'll be around 5 at matriculation).

So, should this stuff be left off? If I should add it where would it go in the order of things? Before Education, and after Pro Experience, or after Ed?

Thanks!

What MBA fair is it?

You actually probably don't need to worry about your resume, none of the MBA fairs I went to had any schools that were accepting resumes.

yeah I'm curious to know as well. The ones I attended were not like job fairs, where the schools were accepting resumes right there. Unless you're trying to just get their opinion to see if you're a good fit? If that's the case, I'm willing to bet that honest feedback will be hard to come by. Most of the schools will encourage you to apply regardless of what your resume looks like.

its the Inside the MBA fair.

hmmm I just figured it was good to have a few on hand just incase. Well good, I wont worry about it then.

I guess we can change this to a general resume question for MBA apps. If I were applying for a job, I wouldnt add any start-ups or side projects I was working on, and wouldnt worry if my work experience seemed a bit longer... but when it comes to MBA apps, these are things I'd want to include, but in a clearer way.

So, how does on go about including side projects while working full time, and relevant jobs held while in undergrad.

While schools rarely accept resumes, some MBA fair organizers invite professional groups that are willing to provide free resume editing services during the fair. If you're willing to wait in line to avail of this perk as an attendee, then you should bring at least one copy of your resume with you.

I'd bring a few just in case. As some have said, they may have editing services there.

Although this thread appears dead, I wanted to resurrect it for a quick follow-up question:

I will be attending an MBA Tour event next week and I had a brief resume question. When attending information sessions / b-school events / tours, would you suggest including your GMAT score on your resume? If so, where is the cutoff? I realize that mine currently is not exactly a point of differentiation, but I was not sure whether it would be helpful to any admissions staff that I've "checked the box". I am not sure if I will bring them, but the site offers the ability to upload a copy and I thought it could not hurt.

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't include your GMAT score as an applicant. Once you're matriculated your school's career services office will guide you on whether or not to include it in your resume for recruiting.

Thanks a bunch for the response.

I wonder how one might list continuing education. After spending a bit of time trolling about the forum, it sounds as though many people have opted for using a template from Tuck or a similar school. Unfortunately, it does not appear that there is a natural place on these templates for non-degree education (such as university extension coursework or workshops one might have attended). This type of information seems particularly relevant for the MBA application process if one intends to demonstrate a sense curiosity about the world.

Any suggestions? Would you list out specific courses taken, eg. Mathematics for Management, Principles of Accounting, etc. or just list the program and the GPA.

I wouldn't bring a resume. It doesn't serve a purpose at an event like this.

I probably won't; it was more of a question for MBA resume's generally. Unfortunately my business cards didn't get printed in time, but they'll be ready in time for school visits.I also thought it might make sense to update my linkedin profile to ensure I have a consistent brand and offer people a way to get more information if they wish to do so.

Do most people include continuing education on their MBA application resumes?

I would not include continuing education on the resume especially with only a few courses and given the usual limit of 1 page on resume.

I did some continuing education (as part of a master's program I didn't complete) at a top school. I also went there for undergrad, so I just put a line item under by bachelor's area saying (Completed post-baccalaureate work in finance and accounting at the XXX School of Business). So, if it's a big name school, I'd go for it.

Hello! The event is the QS MBA World Tour in San Francisco and a resume submission is required through the site (I can't link yet) in order to meet with a representative from one of my schools of interest (University of Wisconsin). A resume is only needed to meet one on one, not in general. Hope this helps

I got an email from Vanderbilt who are coming to my city later next month with The MBA Tour. They've invited to meet on-on-one and I'm supposed to submit my resume if I want to. I guess it's the same process.

Ok, glad it's not just me! Are you going to submit a resume then? I am working on a b school resume now. I know it won't be stellar since I'm just researching for now, but I have specific questions to ask my prospective school that would be appropriate for a one on one I think.

I'm still considering it at this point. Vanderbilt (Owen) isn't a school I've considered due to the Nashville, TN location, but I'll do some more research on their program before I make up my mind.

Are you doing one-on-on interviews with any school besides Wisconsin?

No, as of now they are my only personal meeting.
