Just one step forward. The idiom should be 'as much because,,,,,, as because'; Choice 4 is the only one that flaunts it. All others use unparallel and unidiomatic expressions.

Answer: D

Strike 1
Parallelism - 'of' is redundant. It should be 'as much because [something] as [something]' -> eliminate A, B and C.

Strike 2
Rule: event/matter should immediately be followed with the 'when' info. E.g. 'I had a huge cake for my birthday last year' and not '..for my birthday of last year'.
It should be 'their sales a year earlier'. Again, 'of' is redundant. -> eliminate E

Could be the wrong one, but the reason I didn't go with (5) is because of the "as bad", this year the sales are better and not as bad as last year.. :)

i pick D. A and E are out for parallelism. B and C are out dont convey the meaning clearly. correct me if i am wrong.

P.S please give me kudos if you like it.... :-D

Easy to choose choice D by parallelism principle AS MUCH BECAUSE OF ....SO BAD AS BECAUSE

This was a tough one. Thankfully, I got it right.

A >> "of their" and "as that" are incorrect
B >> "of their" is incorrect
C >> "of their" again the problem
D >> The only feasible answer when you read it real close
E >> "as that" is incorrect

D is also clearly the answer, because "a year earlier" necessitates the use of past perfect. No other answer choice does this.

Hi

I forgot about the comparison rule as much X as Y but opted for 4 because

"were getting a head start" is a background activity happening last year, with main emphasis on "sales a year earlier was bad" but had should be present as bad sales should not have been stopped then and there it self.

Please correct me if i am wrong at thinking in this point although comparison is the main test pattern here.
