Because of is used to describe the adverb but here it is describing the adjective So A,B,C are ruled out. As bad as is used be to compare two parallel actions but no other actions is described
So Ans is D

Here its giving two reason for more gain. One is a past action and must use 'Had been' and second is a present action. can be put as as much because of A as Because of B hope this helps..

I chose the answer D for this question:
A. This answer choice breaks the parallelism requirement: "as much because...as because." Also, the choice of words is wordy - "being so bad."
B. This answer choice is not concise at all. The use of "having been as bad" is very wordy.
C. This answer choice is also very wordy - "being as bad."
D. This answer choice presents the 2 reasons for moderate gains in parallel. Also, the use of past perfect tense is fine because it indicates that the poor sales from last year precedes the head start on shopping.
D. Parallelism is broken here.
