Retake or not? (690, 3rd attempt) [#permalink] New post 22 Aug 2012, 03:35
2 months ago: 680 - 43Q/40V
1 month ago: 690 - 45Q/39V
yesterday: 690 - 50Q/33V

I am applying for not this upcoming Fall, but the one after that - so I am still two years out from matriculating. I feel like I could perform much better on the exam, and each time I feel like if I retook the exam right after, I would break the 700 barrier. Seeing my potential of 50Q/40V, I feel like I have a lot left on the table.

I will be applying to UCLA/Berkeley/UVA/Dartmouth. A 690 would be below each of those averages, yet will taking the exam for a 4th time hurt me? I'm not worried about the price/time/opportunity cost involved as I am still two years out. Any thoughts?

You came down from V40 to V33. I don't think it was your best performance. You rocked the quants. So keep quants as it is and bring your old verbal magic back. You'll be golden.

I know how frustating it is to see same score again. I got 610 twice, exactly 1 month apart. Don't know if GMAC keeps a note of your level somewhere. But I'm definitely taking it again.

The schools you are aiming for are pretty demanding. So I would say, give it one more try. Make sure you have good story for taking 4 attempts, if adcoms ask. The 4 attempts can also show how hard working and perfectionist you are and how much you wanted to go to a good school. Taking GMAT once is an ordeal, but you did it thrice already. That shows how strong and consistent you are.

Keep your spirits high and do it (again)!

This really shows how much stamina matters in this exam.
When you tend to give your maximum in the quant you would be pretty tired and verbal is affected.
Don't know how to build it other than giving more tests etc.
One idea could be to sit for 2.5 hours on weekdays giving one of the following
- Two Quant Sections Back to Back
- Quant + IR section Back to Back.
- Quant + Verbal Back to Back

Hey Pstrench,

If we take the high score on both (50Q and 40V), that will be a very good score. By this experience you should have a very good insight on what worked and what didn't. On your analysis, what do you think helped you to increase your Q score from 43 and 50? Also, what do you think caused the decrease of 7 points in your verbal score? This analysis would help you as well as us.

43 to 50 in quant was definitely as a result of the GMAT Club tests.

The drop of verbal, probably a result of concentrating on quant, because I had verbal "in the bag".

Can you please elaborate on how you used the GMAT Club test? How many GMAT Club Tests did you take? Did you use the Old or the New Gmat Club Test? Thanks.

I took GMAT Clubs quizzes in sets of 10 (either PS or DS) under the new format. I would do the problems one at a time and check the answers as I went. As far as the amount, I am not certain...but probably in the area of 200 DS and 200 PS, if not more.
