Rise in H1B Visa fees in US [#permalink] New post 15 Aug 2010, 00:36
There was a steep rise in the cost that the companies will bear for employing a non-US citizen.

How is that going to affect the job market? Is it still worthed for a non-Us citizen to risk his/her life saving or take a huge loan for a job opportunity that might not exist anymore?

Please share your thoughts with your backgrounds as well.

For me, I am an Indian and have a work ex of 2.5 years in the aviation industry

Yikes! Looks like the senate passed a bill that would increase the H1-B application fee from $1500 to $5000.

It hasn't passed the house yet, so it's not a sure thing.

I would imagine this would have a negative impact on companies looking to hire H1-Bs. It's not a small increase.

Probably just depends on the company to be honest. It's not cheap to hire anybody, let alone an MBA grad, so if the cost of employing them went from $450K over three years, to $454K over three years, is it really that big of a deal?

I don't think the cost matters so much when put in contrast to how much of a pain in the ass it is to do an H1B. First, most the big firms use an outside lawyer (typically fragomen) who will easily rack up fees higher than this. Then there is the job advertising and petitioning each year. The cost is but one small piece. Maybe some will balk, but they will only be the marginal firms (of which there aren't many anyway). Big firms will still do as they do.

@refurb Thanks for the positive input. The bill includes only those companies that have more than 50 percent of non-US workforce. So, it is still not that bad situation as there arent many companies which employ more tha 50 percent non-US employees. Good day!

@3underscore Reading your comments makes me want to become a lawyer rather than a manager :) Good day!

Yup, it will almost exclusively affect Indian software companies such as Infosys, Wipro, etc. and not US based companies.
