There is no consensus on what role, if any, is played by acid rain in slowing the growth or damaging forests in the eastern United States.
(A) slowing the growth or damaging - parallelism test; see my note
(B) the damage or the slowing of the growth of - damage /slowing are not parallel
(C) the damage to or the slowness of the growth of - simple present tense
(D) damaged or slowed growth of - past tense
(E) damaging or slowing the growth of - correct

Note - Underlined should be in present continuous, so the answer is either A or E. In A - 'slowing the growth' and 'damaging forests' are not parallel... to make it parallel, it should be 'slowing the growth of' and 'damaging forests', so answer is E.

The answer is E. issue is parallelism and meaning.
D -adjectives (past participles ) modifying growth not forest. meaning too also changed
What role acid rain plays in damaged forests - that makes it sound like the forests were already damaged by something else, before the acid rain came along. That's not the intention - the intention is to say that the acid rain is (potentially) causing damage - or damaging the forests- ---From stacey (MG instructor)
C- slowness of growth( showing a state of growth not decreasing in rate of growth )
B-comparing complex gerund to damage .not an issue .but meaning still not clear.E is better than B
A- damaging forest ,again adjective(present participle ) modifying forest

(A) slowing the growth or damaging "the growth" needs "of"
(B) the damage or the slowing of the growth of The first two definite articles aren't necessary and it should be "damaging" to match "slowing"
(C) the damage to or the slowness of the growth of unnecessary definite articles before damage and slowness, damage to and slowness aren't parallel
(D) damaged or slowed growth of implies that the growth is damaged
(E) damaging or slowing the growth of

Hi,

In this SC question, your knowledge of finding parallels is tested.

Start by eliminating choices:

Option A: slowing the growth...damaging: growth of what? no reference.
Option B: the damage...the slowing of the growth of: not parallel
Option C: the damage to...the slowness of the growth of: not parallel
Option D: damaged...slowed growth of modifying forests or growth: not clear

There is no consensus on what role, if any, is played by acid rain in damaging or slowing the growth of the forests. Acid rain occurs when air pollutants, chiefly sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, change chemically in the atmosphere and fall to earth as acidic rain, snow, fog or dry particles.

The corrected sentence must make clear that both damaging and slowing the growth of refer to forests. E is the only choice that does so without introducing errors. In choice A, of is required after growth. In choices B and C, the use of the damage instead of damaging produces awkward and wordy constructions, and without to after damage, B is grammatically incomplete. In C, the slowness of does not convey the original sense that the rate of growth has been slowed by acid rain. Choice D also changes the meaning of the sentence by making both damaged and slowed refer to growth.

(A) slowing the growth or damaging
Acid rain does not damage the forest, it can damage the growth
(B) the damage or the slowing of the growth of
Not parallel
(C) the damage to or the slowness of the growth of
Not parallel
(D) damaged or slowed growth of
We need ing form not ed

(E) damaging or slowing the growth of
