Roughly: Gas stations compute price per gallon (p) by adding [#permalink] New post 14 Oct 2006, 11:52
Roughly: Gas stations compute price per gallon (p) by adding 4% sales tax to dealer's price (d), then adding gas tax of .18 per gallon. What is p in terms of d?

Answer was d = p-.18/1.04.

I tried plugging in numbers, and somehow could not come up with this. Would someone please help? Thanks.

d is dealer's price per gallon
sales tax = 4% of d = 0.04d

Therefore p = d + 0.04d + 0.18
p= 1.04d + 0.18
d = p-0.18 / 1.04
