Here are some tips about best practices that can help you in the final weeks before the Round 2 deadlines:Submit your recommendations relatively early
. Some recommendation writers will take vacation at the end of December, in observance of Christmas or winter break. Don’t forget that, because of this, recommendation writers might be hard to get a hold of at the end of December. Try to work with them to get the recommendations completed and submitted in a timely manner.Use essays excellently
. Remember that the profile of the incoming MBA class will have already begun to form: with Round 1 admissions, each business school will have admitted candidates from a wide range of backgrounds. With a Round 2 application, you are asking the admissions committee to add you to that specific mix. Be certain to distinguish yourself to make it crystal clear why you should be added to the mix. What valuable attributes and experiences will you bring to the school? How will you enhance the MBA class and learning in the MBA program? It is imperative that you answer these questions well.Use recommendations wisely
. Because the MBA class profile has begun to form, it is also imperative that you distinguish yourself through your recommendations. As I have written elsewhere, your recommendations are as important for admissions as your essays. You can get rejected from a top program on the basis of one mediocre recommendation alone. In Round 2, it is important that you use the recommendations to distinguish yourself in the same way that you are using the MBA admissions essays to do so. What valuable attributes and experiences will you bring to the school? How will you enhance the MBA class and learning in the MBA program? The recommendations should answer these questions well.Make great use of strategic content
. Make sure you choose strategic content for your essays. Remember, the essays function in many ways like your marketing package – use them to highlight at greater length the key achievements, experiences and attributes that will make the admissions committee want to admit you. Use the application form to your great advantage
. Many candidates make the mistake of filling out the online application form at the last minute, unaware of how extensive the forms can be. The typical MBA application form itself provides ample space for you to provide strategic content about your extracurricular activities, your jobs, your achievements at various jobs, and reasons why you left each job. In those areas of the online application, you can present outstanding information that can potentially make the admissions committee lean toward admitting you even before they begin reading your essays! Use the application form wisely. Make sure your resume works for you: boost your admissions chances through the details
. In Round 2, since the shape of the incoming MBA class has already begun to form, you want everything in your application to work for you. A resume says a lot about you. Does your resume look like a business resume? Is it tailored well? Does the language of your resume convey your excellence? Does your resume convey the sense that you have put ample time into preparing your overall application? Use the resume to your advantage in Round 2.Cast your net wide
. A Round 1 candidate has the benefit of applying to Round 2 schools if that candidate finds he or she is doing excellently in the Round 1 admissions process. That is, Round 1 candidates can be inspired to apply to more competitive schools if they are fairing well in Round 1 admissions. Similarly, for a candidate who does not feel they are doing as well as they’d like in Round 1, they have an opportunity in Round 2 to cast their net wider. As a Round 2 candidate, if you are seeking to maximize your chances of gaining admission to a range of schools you will be happy with, cast your net wider in Round 2 from the get-go. Apply to one or two extra safety schools, and consider applying to an extra reach school as well. Draw on information about Round 1 interviews
. After you submit your applications, begin to prepare for interviews and make certain to draw on the information that is available about trends in MBA admissions interviewing for specific schools. For example, in Round 1 of this year, some top business schools changed their style of admissions interviews and focused largely on behavioral questions. As a Round 2 candidate, you can employ this information well. If you are applying to those schools, look up some common behavioral questions and become familiar with best practices, learning how you can respond excellently to behavioral questions. Similarly, some schools have been offering shorter interviews; others have been shifting to longer interviews. Get familiar with the trends and prepare yourself by rehearsing in tailored mock interviews. Consider enrolling with a reputable consultant – even in the last days before the Round 2 deadlines
. Many candidates leave a bulk of their work for their MBA applications until the winter break during the last two weeks of December. Many candidates find at that time that they feel uncertain about their essay content and they want a consultant to give them feedback and/or edit their essays. But, given the timing, they often fear it is too late to enroll with a reputable consultant. You will find that many consultants work full-time in the last two weeks of December, because those are the last two weeks prior to the earliest Round 2 deadlines. At the end of December and early January, many reputable consultants are usually prepared to offer very quick turnaround and excellent work in a tight timeframe. So if you need assistance, do your homework and try to select a reputable consultant who can give you vital support in the weeks and days leading up to the Round 2 deadlines.
